I’m looking for a few Shorthorn straws with the view of keeping heifers as suckler replacements. Any suggestions what I could use? Or anyone happy with a particular straw? Every AI company seems to have a few different shorthorns on offer.

In 2020 I used SH4319 (Hussar of Upsall -p) 6.1%cd and SH4192 (Buncraggy Fire Fox - ro/p) 6.8%cd on four black whiteheads, three SHx, two SIx and one LMx heifers. One of the simmentals needed a hand pull on the ropes but the rest calved on their own and one of the shorthorns put her calf bed out after calving by herself. We would be careful enough about not overfeeding in calf heifers and cows but they get either mineral boluses or dry cow minerals on the silage and rolled oats for a few weeks before calving.

Thanks for the suggestions. How did the calves turn out for you? Did you keep any of the heifers as replacements? Get any roan calves?
