What are peoples thoughts on the farm jobs in demand and services (dehorning, scanning, hoof trimming etc) sought after in these current times?
Are you thinking of providing a service?
Scanning, dehorning and castration are the only ones we'd have to get someone in to do. I'm looking to move from dehorning to disbudding. Usually get the local vet in to do it all. However, if someone came with a good reputation and insurance they might get some business.
I wouldn't be keen to be one of the first customers though.
Night calver in some compact calving larger herds, have seen a number of ads on donedeal in recent weeks.
Power hosing sheds/yards.
Sheep shearing if you're fit for it, €50/hr if you're fit, also sheep and cow scanning is a good money spinner too
I knew a fella that did the night calving in a place. He said it was grand really. No one shouting at you! Just you and the cows. Feed the calf, put a coat on it and iodine on the navel. The day shift would sort them out after that.
why dont you use polled bulls.
It's nearly as hard to get a fencing man as a builder these days, ended up having to buy a stake driver here and fence the whole place ourselves over the past two years , had 3 different contractors in the yard who quoted for the job and promised they'd do it, never turn up.....
It's a hateful job in warm weather with creosote stakes though, its surprising how much you'll get done in a day once you have the hang of it, one man show would do 400 metres easily with 1 euro plus vat for labour only on single strand fence you'd have a good wage out of it
I wrote it after a day on this fucker lol
How's the head 😁
I do all the single or double strand electric fencing with clipex posts, I just drive timber strainers, ideally esb poles..no post driver, creasote or staples to drive..very very fast, wasn't anymore expensive than creosote posts but haven't bought in the last year.
Have some here 6 years as good as new.
do you drive the esb posts by hand?
Oh jaysus no, just meant for the intermediate posts, I got a lend of a post driver from a neighbour to drive some strainers..on a few short runs I drove 7ft Turner posts by hand as strainers with the clipex.
Then about 16 posts on some of our land I dug holes and concreted in the esb poles because you wouldnt drive them there anyway with stone so close to the surface..I didn't need any gym that summer
We do, but we buy in some calves annually and most would be non polled.
