18 March holiday

Does anyone know if 18th March is a public holiday or bank holiday? I'm wondering what it is for payment purposes in the public service. It's the difference between double time and just a normal day's pay if you are due on that day. But with Paddy's day being the day before (double time) are they allowed to give two allowances back to back like that?

Noone can really give me an answer.

BANK HOLIDAY is my understanding....... it's a "double " for payment purposes for those working in my company anyhow.

Not sure why back to back would be an issue? 25th and 26th December are BHs paid back to back (maybe I'm misunderstanding you?)

As far as I know it's to be a Bank Holiday.

Unless you work in a bank (or want to use a bank's services), "bank holiday" has no relevance.

"Public holiday" is the only phrase that matters, and both 17th and 18th of March this year are public holidays, both have the same legal standing, there is no difference between them

Not sure what point you're making? There are a number of days which are bank holidays but not public holidays. That doesn't affect the accuracy of what I said

I don't work in a bank - so most jobs I've had in Ireland, I've had to either work or take annual leave on Good Friday. Same for most workers, AFAIK.

I always thought it was a Church Holiday!!! Even thought the Banks are the only people I know that close for it.

Never worked in a company that gave this off. Had a few religious colleagues who took it off but always as a holiday from their entitlements

In my current workplace (not a bank) its a compulsory, but taken from annual leave, day. However, when it was made compulsory (along with the three work days between Christmas and NYE) we were given four days extra annual leave to cover it, so arguably for longer serving workers it just became a day off. Odd setup.

I have had to work on some of those four days and only get the one day leave back as a result.

Still a bit of confusion...I work in the public service but am actually on leave that week. Was just wondering if I cancel leave for 18th is it an allowance day for payment purposes? If it is not a bank holiday and just a public holiday it's a normal pay day. Don't want to cancel the day unneccessarily.

Threads like this remind me how good my employer is about this sort of thing - Good Friday is a day off and we get a half-day on Christmas and New Years Eve. 27 days holiday too!

Not for the wider public service or certainly not the health service,we have to work or request day off. It is a popular time to be off for anyone with school going children of course so would be quieter day at work.
