If you pass a speed van while your motor tax is expired on that vehicle, can they detect this and send you a fine in the post?

It can be detected but currently not fined.

Speed van takes image of every vehicle passing.

The full file gets sent to Thurles.

A Garda in Thurles then goes through the file and issues the tickets.

    Currently only speeding is detected.

Anpr on most traffic cars and many unmarked cars will check tax.

Only if it's out more than 3 months will they bother stopping you unless they are having a bad day or want to use it as an excuse to stop you

Thanks for the replies. Is there a reason they take a picture of every car, even the ones that aren't speeding?

What if you are in the outside lane and cars on inside lane are blocking the view. Does this happen?

The photo and speed measurement are taken at the exact same time for legal reasons regardless of vehicle speed.

If the camera can't see you it can't measure your speed.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

You car may come up in the photo's however if there is cars on the inside lane they will seldom try to do you for speeding. The reason for this is they cannot get a clear reading and even if they do it's very easy to challenge that the car on the inside is effecting the radar.

If you are on the outside land it's quite possible they do not spend to much time checking details as speeding offence enforcement may not possible.

As others have said the car being without tax may not raise a red flag. What may raise a red flag is if the car was declared off the road.
