Would like people's opinions on this, left my car in to get fixed at garage and got a call to advise that a another customer had reversed into it. The garage called me to advise that it happened and damage isn't major they are offering to arrange to respray the bumper and customer is paying. Should I allow them to do it or go through the insurance and get another garage to quote etc?

If they’re getting it done, and it’s through a reputable paint shop, that removes the risk of you being left with the bill. That’s the main reason for going through the insurance company. I’d probably ask them where they plan to have the work done, and if you’re going to be without the car for a few days, can they accommodate you with either a loan or hire car? If they satisfy you with their replies, I’d let them fix it. They’ve been upfront so far.

They are a small garage and plan to do themselves that's my worry. They are not exactly a paint shop. When I asked would they be respraying the whole bumper I was told no

Ah no, fcuk that. Assuming it’s not a banger that you’re indifferent about, tell them you’re happy to let them pay, but it’s to go to a professional repairer.

Has the bumper got parking sensors in it?

No, the rear one does but it happened to front one.

My opinion is that as the damage occurred on the garage's premises while in their care then they are liable irrespective of it being caused by a third party. If they third party wants to cover the cost of repair then fine but it doesn't mean you have to get it repaired by them, the garage where it happened or by a body shop of their choice. You get to decide. As they are not a body shop there is no way I'd let them do a DIY repair on it just because it suits their or the third party's pocket. A cheap piss poor repair job will show and devalue your car when you go to sell it.

Get your own quote from a reputable body shop and give to the garage. If they refuse to agree to pay it then lodge a claim against their insurance.

I had a garage damage a car and I ended up getting it fixed myself by a repairer of choice. I got reimbursed from the garage with the receipt of the repair. They did say the repair quote was very expensive and they wanted their guy etc to do it for half cost, but a good job done properly will cost. They surely have insurance for such issues like this. Just make sure your happy with the repairer of choice and job done

Have you seen the damage? Could it be a case of they have already fixed it but job is poor and they knew you would notice?

I can't see how anyone could partially respray the bumper without it then being noticeable, definitely a cowboy approach.

They sent me a picture and I'm to call Monday to see it in person. Can't see how it couldn't be a cowboy job if they are not respraying the full bumper. The car is only worth about 6/7k so I'm not crying over it

The shading will be notiecable unless the entire thing is done in one single spraying. It's not like painting the wall of a house with masonry paint.
