Car on Incorrect Tax Rate

    Hi all

I bought a 2008 Yaris 1litre for my mother lately.

When I went to tax it its coming up as been on the C02 rate at 270 euro instead of the old cc rate at 199 euro.

The car was registered in early June 2008 so I believe it should be on the cc rate as the CO2 didn't kick in until July and also at the time you had the option of staying on the lower rate if the car was registered before July.

I feel the car has been on the incorrect rate all its life. I will contact the motor tax office, just wondering if any knowledge people here might know whether it can be put back on the cc rate now after 14 years.

    Thanks

Is it an import? Could have been put on the co2 system at the time of import.

No according to the registration cert its irish from new. The motor tax office have told me its nothing to do with them and I must contact revenue!

    I'm not sure that's correct

They told you the correct information, they simply collect the tax, but can not amend the tax class, Revenue are responsible for the tax class bases, but enquiries should be made to the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division of the DoT, they administer the NVDF which holds the information for vehicle registration and tax class etc on behalf of the DoT and Revenue, the rate however is correct.

€270 appears to be the correct rate as every other 2008 1.0 Yaris on donedeal seems to be on it.

Edit: the only other explanation I can think of is that the CO2 rate was initally less than the CC one. In 2009, the rates were €156 CO2 and €165 CC so only €9 in the difference. Not sure what the July 2008 rates were.

You have hit the nail on the head, at the time the CO2 rate (€150) was cheaper than CC rate (€165) for the 1.0 Yaris, any car registered between 1 January 2008 to 30 June 2008 which had a CC rate basis automatically switched to a CO2 rate on the next motor tax renewal date if the CO2 rate was cheaper at the time - which they were, the CO2 rate is correct as a result of this.

It's the correct rate, they won't entertain any splitting of hairs with you. Move on.

    So here’s what happened.

Yaris was on the old system in early 2008, then models which would be cheaper on emissions (I.e. all of them) were migrated to the Co2 system for marginally cheaper tax.

Then they rose the Co2 tax and left the CC rates alone.

Creating this anomaly. I was selling them back in 08 and remember this clearly.

There was no ‘option’ to change tax basis, it happened automatically in all cases.
