Replacing old Oil Boiler

It's getting on time to replace our old Firebird boiler. It's becoming fussy, and it's tank is rusting too, so it needs a new tank. Plus even if we didn't replace it, we really want to relocate it in order to accommodate some future work.

There are many options, we got a very high quote for replacing it with a Grant that would live in the shed. We'd prefer that the new unit not be in the house as the Firebird smells a bit when it's run, due to the outlet being in the path of the wind so on windy wintry days, some of the exhaust gets blown back into the house :(

Any recommendations on replacing it with an electric boiler? That'd remove the problems of the tank location and the exhaust, but I recognize it'll be more expensive to run. Just how much though? We already use the electric immersion to heat the shower/bath water for an hour or so a day. The Firebird's run during the winter (typically November->March) for an hour or so in the morning. If it gets cold during the day in a room we've got small electric heaters we run. The house is a 2004 bungalow with double-glazed windows (some of which leak and we're in the process of replacing.) It's pretty well insulated, with cavity insulation (the spray-in gray balls) and a well insulated attic that I insulated myself with fibreglass batting.

Another thought is a heat pump, but can you really expect a retrofitted heat pump to work well with existing radiators? There's no chance we can go to in-floor heating, we don't want to rip all the flooring up. And it seems like heat pumps are extremely expensive to install, I only see them used out here (West Kerry) on new homes.

Suggestions welcome, I'm leaning towards relocating the tank and putting in a new Firebird or Grant with the exhausted vented upwards so it doesn't blow back in anymore. But, electric is intriguing too.

    Thank you

We moved from an indoor firebird like yourself for similar reasons to a Grant Vortex, have it on a very low setting and its extremely efficient on kerosene and removes that smell from a 25 year firebird indoors!
