Added named driver with 7 years exp and quote went WAY up, how can I negotiate this?

Has anyone had their insurance quote go up significantly by adding a named driver? I got a great deal with getsetgo and pay 145 a month for fully comp (advance payment quote was less but I pay monthly), but if I add my boyfriend it's going to be an extra 90 a month now (so 720 in total til Oct).

I was going to add him at the start and didn't because the cost seemed so high, but I thought it might be different now... unfortunately not! I don't understand it because everyone says it goes down if you add an experienced driver and he's 26yrs with a full EU license for 7 years. The only things I can think of that put it up are: he doesn't currently drive in Ireland / doesn't have insurance here, his license is Italian (but it's EU which is fine here) and maybe his age? I'm 35 on a provisional license and doing my last EDT next week. Getsetgo are great because they've such low prices but for that reason everything is online, there's no phone customer line, so if I'm not too sure querying it on chat will do me much good. But if I had some comparisons it would help for sure! Any input anyone has of your own experiences would be great.

EU licence is likely the problem, have you tried looking for a quote if you said he has an Irish licence for comparison? Reasoning quotes are high on non Irish licence is penalty points currently can not currently be added to other EU licences so risk is deemed higher. Does he have a no claims bonus from Italy, if he does that may help the quote?

On a side note €720 is not too expensive to add someone with a non Irish licence.

What AD said and as you surmised - UK/Irish licence OK, rest of Europe not so much, no prior experience/history here, still young (maybe)

Asked a few people today and they had the same problem, but it was reduced when changed to an Irish license. He doesn't have insurance in Italy now. Thinking he'll just need to change it over but going to check the quote comparison first! Thanks

EDIT: I just checked and the quote is the exact same if I say he has an Irish license! So odd. Just seems a lot because I've seen a lot of people reduce their insurance by adding a named driver with a full license, so for it to be more seems unusual.

Goes down for many people.

I save 50-100 a year just by adding my family member as a named driver.

He drove my car maybe twice in last 5 years.

No idea why this reduces the price, but it does.

Handy to have someone added in case of emergency anyway.

For someone with a full licence, you are still a learner driver

Same with my quotes I got.

Added my mother and it went up nearly €100. It usually goes down.

But you can add named drivers for about €50 so went that way instead. Well worth shopping around and changing things up like dates, jobs etc you'll be surprised how much you can save.

Example I'd give is my renewal this year was €500, went online to the exact same company typed in all same info and it was €400.

I know you said you checked with Irish licence too but I'd recheck that as it may change with other companies. Of course someone on an Italian licence will be loaded. They drive on the other side of the road and would therefore I'd imagine be considered more of a risk than most.

Yeah it can often make your insurance go down as a learner if you've a full licensed person as a named driver.
