Why cant deaf people swear?

So i watch shows and movies on netflix and disney with the subtitles on. Im hard of hearing but i can still listen but the subtitles censor the curse words. why are they censoring and depriving deaf people to parts of art people worked hard on making? Do deafs not curse? whats the deal lads?

Laziness on the subtitlers' part, save doing a censored and uncensored version.

Check out Japanese stuff. Often the subtitles are different than the English dub because they were translated at different times and in different ways. Sometimes the meaning is completely changed.

You're correct and I was being my usual facetious self. That being said, it bothered me less when I wasn't aware of it 🙂

But deaf and partially deaf people have it so good compared to my mother's generation. Technology has improved things immeasurably, especially with hearing aids. Subtitles are available on all movies and on many other media items. Society treats deaf people differently now also and we're no longer considered the village idiot. Unless we are actually the village idiot.

My grandparents highlight of the day was the news for the deaf on rte1 just before 6.

Technology was having a technicolor TV with rte1 and 2 on it

I often leave subtitles on, and it is interesting to note how often things are abbreviated, sometimes words left out, sometimes whole phrases - particularly in fairly fast paced comedy like Frasier or Cheers. It does seem a bit condescending, as if the poor deaf people won't be able to keep up.

It depends on who supplies the subtitles.....you will often see at the end subtitles supplied by......

Rte are one of the worst for it, they spend half the time deleting what they've put up due to a spelling mistake or wrong word.....then you'll get a massive wall of txt that takes over the whole screen

There are a couple of shows I watch that I leave the subtitles on for various reasons like an accent I can’t always follow

I have not encountered profanity being censored in subtitles

best thing to do is make a complaint to the customer support and the feedback forums.

I remember the profanity was censored on The Shooter series on Netflix. I was not happy about it both because it happens and that I had to stop watching because the cuts were so badly done. It wasn’t Netflix though - this is the version that they getting from the producers

Subtitles, while more widespread, have gotten worse since the 90s. My parents always had them on (which has given me a superpower not many people have of not getting annoyed by subtitles) and they used to be word perfect.

Live ones came along and they were ok to begin with but with a decent delay. Then they moved towards automated subtitles with someone supervising and they got much worse.

I'm pretty sure some subtitle companies still do automated stuff even for non-Live TV. Have I Got News for You for some reason the appear in blocks but usually a sentence or 2 behind.

RTE are a shambles for subtitles full stop now. Sometimes they're there on one TV, sometimes they aren't, sometimes they're there on a different TV, sometimes they aren't. Got worse with the switch to digital TV and if anything it's been getting worse.

It's one of the things that technology (or at least the use of it) has made things worse. Channel 4 (and others) had a huge issue with them last year.

There are more subtitles available than ever which is a good thing but the QA and the bar for what's deemed acceptable is really poor. 20 years ago an anime would be shown on Japanese TV and within 20 hours (some groups got down to 10 at times) it would have been downloaded, translated, subtitles created and added (hardcoded) to the video and up for everyone to download and watch. Or you could download a subtitle file (most formats were almost plain text with new lines for parsing and times to display each line just right there) and loads of media players could display them perfectly over a video. All done by a bunch of people for free. And they would do a re-release of a video with hard-coded subtitles if there was more than a couple of typoes in the entire video.

It's crazy to me just how poor it's gotten. Signing is a lovely addition at times but subtitles really shouldn't be such a **** challenge to get right.

If I watch a scandi-noir or something, in the original dialogue, with subtitles as I prefer, all the swearing is left in. I assume faithfully so.

Why the **** should that not be the case for closed captions for deaf people in their own first language? I'm shocked if it isn't, you mother funnies youse.

Slightly off topic but why is there different signage for each language? Eg sign language for English is different than sign language for German!

That kind of deleting back would only happen with live subtitling, the Late Late or the News or whatever.

Recorded shows like this would always have subtitles prepared in advance. And yes, you can often see the ID of the subtitle producer at the end. For a lot of American stuff on C4 or BBC, the subtitles seem to have been generated in the UK strangely enough.

Why is English different to German? Because languages evolve differently in different countries, and sign languages are the same.

Check out the NI government events, with the ISL and BSL interpreters, one on each side. Some similarities, but different languages - just like any written/verbal language.

Because most people who are deaf aren't entirely deaf. They will often have some hearing, to allow them to hear some speech in some circumstances, and will therefore pick up accents like everyone else.

I don't understand why they can't have live subtitles for the news it's all on autocue anyway, unless they are doing an interview obviously. For one person talking straight ahead I don't see why what's on the autocue can't be streamed. They stopped the news for the deaf that had this feature just as the pandemic hit. So anyone who is hard of hearing but doesn't sign was really disadvantaged especially when people on the news were wearing masks.

Operation transformation is another one that's a disaster, most of that show could easily be prerecorded.

I gave up on this week's "crimes and confessions" as the subtitles were all over the place and Smother wasn't much better , so no it's not just live shows.

I'm with you; the only time I use subtitles is for Scandi-noir or similar, and I have to say it's generally fantastic. Borgen, Bordertown, you name it, the subtitling is terrific. I find that because I have to watch rather than have my attention drift off, relying on the dialogue if the movie's in English, I get much greater enjoyment from it.

Watched Tommy Tiernan last night, subtitles were perfect even all the f's plus they included extra information....if interviewee was hesitant they stated hesitantly then the words which was pretty cool.
