Selling on car but tax arrears?

I’ve got an old 07 car that’s been lying up off road for about 2 or 3 years and I want rid of it at this point.

Never thought of declaring it ‘off the road’ and was paying tax up till last year but didn’t renew and now owe arrears.

Can I sell the car on without paying the arrears?

Once you sign it over to someone else the arrears will be gone

The tax arrears disappear once ownership changes.

If sold, tax is due from the first day of the month of sale. There are no other arrears. From a buyers point of view, do not buy the last week of a month as you have to tax for the whole of THAT month. Get the idea?

There’s no way this can come back to bite me later if I go to tax a new car? It seems to good to be true!

Yes.

If you scrap a car with current tax you can get a refund of unused tax. Car must have a minimum of 3 months tax left AFAIR.

A new buyer can declare the car off road to avoid the scenario you outline (buying late in the month). New owner has 10 days from purchase date to declare off-road.
