Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Great info Rory. What’s the deal with the VAT you paid in the UK buying the car? Do you get a refund of that because it is for export?

Is there VAT on a secondhand car when sold to a private individual? I don't think there is. Open to correction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,112 ✭✭✭hoodie6029

Wouldn’t be in that scenario but would be when bought from a dealer or at auction.

Would you not have to be VAT registered to reclaim?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,112 ✭✭✭hoodie6029

I’m hoping to find all that out.

    Hi guys,

a question for those more knowledge about importing.

The "late registration" fine is set at .1% per day, I see.

Is this .1% of the €200 registration fee?

I have a classic car which was brought into the State back 17 years ago, but never imported and registered.

It is now 40 years of age, and obviously was in Ireland long before Brexit.

Am I right in saying that the late registration fee will be 20 Cent/day since date of import? (.1% of €200 equals 20 cent)

    20 cent per day x 365 x 17 = €1241 late fee?

Penalty on a vintage is capped at €200. I know loads of people who've done late registrations, including myself, and none of them were ever charged a late payment fee. One or two people say otherwise, but I suspect they're the type to make stuff up.

Many thanks kdevitt, that's very good news indeed!

Great info to have as I have been struggling to figure out the process around the 23% VAT on vintage.

I have a scenario where I am looking a car that has the following timeline of movements between countries:

    Car is 1991

Imported into UK from Japan in 1999

Not entirely sure but I think this car was registered in Northern Ireland for 2 years and then moved back to UK and UK plates.

Next owner then had it from 2005 to 2008 which has MOT history for but none prior to 2005.

Car was moved to Germany then but not registered there only stored there and bought this year in February by a buyer in Ireland.

Car is currently still on UK plates but is now in the country over 6 months so will likely incur the late penalty.

OMSP for this car would be in the region of €15k

Actual price that will be paid for the car is €6000 as there are some issues with the car, not running currently

    Are my calculations below correct?

    Vintage VRT = €200

Late VRT penalty on vintage = €200

    23% VAT on €6000 = €1380

    Total = €1780

The fact that this was a Jap import could this possibly have duty due also?

Also if this car was registered in NI prior to Brexit then maybe this could qualify for no VAT rule? If so then would the V5 show this history as I wouldn't have any other way of proving?

Don't think theres any VAT liability on that once the invoice is shown to be from a German seller? The purchase is from an EU country - just VRT I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 danbarr47

Sorry I probably confused the situation by mentioning it was stored in Germany. The car was never officially exported to Germany so there is no record of it being in Germany.

Car is UK plates and not classed as exported from the UK on the system.

I do know the car was registered in NI for approx 2 years and this was pre-Brexit so I think I am covered with this and should only be owing VRT =€200.

Hoping the current owner has some documentation to prove this as I have been unable to find anything with car checks online.

Who and where did you buy it from though?

If you are buying from Germany then it should be OK and free of VAT. You may still need the assistance of an import agent and a declaration by the seller that the car was in Germany for many years and was sold in Germany. Youll need to import it without going trough the UK. Given out lor unlikely to help you much.

Bought it here in Ireland private sale.

From what I have been looking into I need to talk to an import agent as I have no documentation currently so show that this car was in NI pre-Brexit. There is also no documentation to show this car was in Germany either so currently looks to them that I just imported the car from UK.

I may go down the route of declaring this as damaged/ repairable as engine needs a rebuild and also hoping to get the 13.5% VAT as will only be using the car once on the road for exhibitions and shows.

Hopefully import agent may advise more once I ring them tomorrow.

Anyone know of a way of getting MOT history of a custom UK/ NI plate? This car used a NI reg plate between 2001 and 2005 not sure of exact dates but when I look that reg up now it shows as a completely different vehicle and has no MOT history pre 2005.

If I can get MOT history showing this car was in the NI pre brexit I would be in a good place.

Currently I can show that the car did use this reg plate pre brexit but without MOT history showing NI location it is no good to me

Use this site but it only works with UK registration plates not NI plates as the NI MOTs are not recorded on a system like this one.

Check the MOT history of a vehicle - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Be careful about the 13.5% VAT rate

    Thanks for that.

Been to VRT centre today and the girl was 50/50 about letting me defroster it by only paying the €200 vrt and no VAT but I think she just played it safe and said pay the VAT and customs.

Ive also been in contact with a customs broker and I’ve 2 options.

    1) Pay additional VAT (23%) and and customs duty (10%)

    2) Pay additional VAT and claim vintage status to customs to avoid the customs duty (10%)

Option 2 can be a long process as customs will look for photos inside and outside, proof of payment like bank transfer etc, query price paid for the car versus open market value.

To keep things straight forward I’m going to go with option 1

VRT enquiry page is a bit misleading so does anyone know (or take a punt at) the total import cost on the following UK car:-

    AUDI TT. Reg. 2000. 1.8l 225bhp.

    Mileage c.100,000 miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,334 ✭✭✭w124man

    Rough guess

    VRT €1657

VAT 23% of purchase price + shipping

    Duty 10%

    Customs fees probably €100

    Hi all,

New to boards as I'm at my wits end trying to find info on getting some vintage cars VRT'd, and this thread is the only place I've found some sensible info.

@kdevitt your comment above is music to my ears as this is the exact situation in front of me - car is 1981, been in the country 10+ years but never registered (still on UK plates). Can you give me some more info on how you went about it? eg. how to prove the car entered the country pre-brexit, but was also classed as vintage when it entered? The VRT phone line won't confirm that the penalty will be capped at €200. They just say to make the appointment at the NCT centre and bring as much supporting documentation as possible. Thanks in advance!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭kdevitt

Doesn't need to have been vintage when it came into the country - just needs to be vintage when you go to register it. The max penalty is on the revenue commissioners own website - vintage are category C

    VRT Manual Section 05 - Enforcement (revenue.ie)

Vehicles in the State more than 6 months

 Category A, Category B and Motorcycles: Increase the previous penalty at the rate of 5% of the penalty per month or part of a month of the period that has elapsed since registration was due

     Category C vehicles: €200 per vehicle.

Is there any portal where you can do the custom element of bringing in a car from uk or is it solely done through importers?

thinking of bring in a 4x4 around 30-35 years old between £5-10k, just trying to work out the costs and if I can drive it home the day I buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭kdevitt

I drove my last car straight in and had it cleared afterwards. You can do the customs declaration yourself if you're comfortable with it - I went with bell.ie to do mine.

Thanks I think I will chat them. Had you duty to pay or just VAT of purchase price?

For vintage you'll generally only pay VAT - no duty. Give them a call, they're very helpful.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18 Squint.89

Perfect, will do. Thanks for the replies.

    Many thanks @kdevitt.

Going to go ahead and start the process now.

    Did you mean VRT only?

I would have thought if VAT applies, duty would apply as well?

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭kdevitt

No, I mean VAT. Cars over 30 years of age generally don't incur duty when cleared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭RINO87

Hi lads....so what's the story with paying the VAT on a car still on UK plates, but has been in the country a few months? Is it calculated on whatever I pay for the car, or do I need the seller here to include documentation for what they paid for the car in the UK?
