Is the 'Fighting Irishman' a Complete Fabrication?

The one thing I have taken from the last 22 months of this pandemic is that Irish males - for the most part - are total and complete pussies. Especially among the so called hardmen in my town. They were cowering in absolute petrified terror watching the RTE fear porn extravaganza - night after night - over a virus that kills 1% of the population. If you want a real laugh go read Boards.ie from around April to May 2020 and the quaking terrors of the Irish male is practically comical looking at it now. No wonder it was so easy for the English to take the country over. A nation of easily rattled mammys boys.

Oh you’re such a hard man, I’m swooning here, my bodice is ripping itself off…you’re just so cool…there is a cure for small dick syndrome buy an enormous dildo with a hollow centre, it will work for a while until your partner starts laughing hysterically when you strap it on…and then it’s best to move to another village…but you know that already :D

I think you'll find the the term fighting Irish referred to our cousins in the USA in particular. Don't forget back then they weren't given free houses and free dinnes, the Irish had to fight for every scrap of recognition in the States that went on for generations until they got into the political and judicial system.

You could say the same for the Irish lads sent to Van Diemans lad Australia. The rebels who actually took on the English invaders and paid with their freedom ( although most of these transported actually made a better life for themselves across there)

Certainly the term fighting Irish doesnt apply to what's here today. It suits the media and government anyway, you ever wonder why rte throw the term "far right" around like confetti? It's sad and laughable. If the 1916 martyrs existed today then rte would be calling them far right.

Boxing by a long shot is our best sport at the olympics, both male and female, then you have Conor McGregor and all the traveller youtube guys threatening and daring each other, that stuff is widely shared all over the world . Surely there must be alot of truth to the stereotype. Conor McGregor is the symbol of Ireland to alot of people that don't know much about the country

I was talking to a guy and he said he seen a couple in a trendy bar... she was plucking his eyebrows...

More an aspect of by-gone days than a complete fabrication.

The paranoid fear of death, anxiety disorders, crippling phobias, OCDs would be bad outcomes even if the danger from covid was as real and as bad as the emotional manipulation coming from media and institutions made it out to be.

The fighting Irish were already gone in 2008 when we all happily paid up out austerity taxes in order to not make a show of ourselves Infront of Europe

Was only a handful of fighter's back then and at the beginning they were viewed as making a holy show of us

Nothing more we hate than standing out , many will wear masks (outside in fresh air)and take a sixth shot for no reason other than to fit in with what's respectable

How many men have you killed for looking sideways at you OP?

Weird thread, but in general the male part of the population are certainly more feminine and weaker in the last 20 years, just look at the young lads running in leggings, getting all sorts done to their hair, waxing of eyebrows and chest ect wearing skinny jeans like girls and alot of them you certainly wouldn't want to go into the trenches with, then there's the media and the labelling of toxic masculinity, to be accepted now you must nearly cow down to what women want, a gentle sensitive type.

Oh my God that is shocking 😲 and not a GAA jersey or sulky racer in sight. Those sort of bars have been in London and other big cities for decades just because they have now only started in Dublin doesn't mean Ireland has suddenly turned all metrosexual, there are still loads of gaa neanderthals to cancel all that out

To be fair, there seems to be far more interest in things like going to the gym and strength and conditioning etc these days.

I think a lot of the Irish stereotypes, from drinking to fighting, seem to be ancient remnants from the days of immigrant workers in the USA and UK. Statistically Ireland isn't a crazy drinking country and you'll see more violence in USA and UK than you'll ever see here. Also fighting in the streets is about the dumbest thing you could participate in, do you really want to gamble your future on some petty ego matter?

This is true and it's great for health, but it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog that counts. A big muscle bound wimp is still a wimp.

Lol that's idiotic stuff from you, why in this day and age do we need to fight, there's no threat to anyone walking around going about their business, I haven't been in a scrap since school and believe me I wasn't fighting for my freedom or life, what we are is a nation of people who go to work with no fear of being attacked while people are paid to protect us, and the work that goes into being a "muscle bound wimp" is something you probably wouldn't understand.

There's plenty like you that think you're full of fight but only online, you've nothing to fear in your daily life so make it up that we're all pussys afraid of our shadows, have a good day dropping into Starbucks for your cappuccino making your way home to play Minecraft grinding your teeth at all the wasters going around enjoying their freedom which you did nothing to contribute too.

hmm. Only to a certain extent. Insofar that the aggressive person might "win" a confrontation due to intimidation. They might have the confidence to rush in, swing wildly on adrenaline and the other person would panic. If they don't get the job done in that 30 seconds then they don't have a plan b.

I boxed for a few years and you'd regularly get those hard-men wannabes in. More often than not they didn't last, because they'd want to batter someone so you could put them in the ring in with a smaller boy a few years younger than them that would take them apart and that would soften their cough fairly lively.

Most of the guys in this country who think they are hard are a’holes who get tanked up on drink and start someone smaller than them in the chippy after a night out.

The other is the GAA hard man who thinks a bit of shoulder barging or slapping hard at the ball as he tackles a player is a great display of machoism.

Bizzare post. What a massive generalisation to make. Men come in all types, shapes and personalities. Its generally true that the bigger the mouth, the softer the man when it comes to actual fighting or confrontation. Empty vessels really do make the most noise and if a man has to shout or boast about how hard he is, its normally to drown out the voice saying hes not hard. I work with a guy about late 40s and hes a big mouth but anytime someone stands up to him, he turns into a sulky child and cries on all his (female) co workers shoulders for validation, its quite something to witness!

Then again, you can get hard men with loud personalities, quiet men who are very weak. Equally, some quiet men would put you into casualty if you crossed them, so its a spectrum of too passive to too aggressive with all manner of men representing the scale from 0 to 100.

My own anecdotal view is that most men really are passive to their wives and end up doing everything they are told from the moment they settle into a comfy relationship right up to death! The wives control the finances, where they go on holidays, the kids and the schools etc. Not all women do this but a huge amount do. Its sad to see a man who cant even watch a film or meet a mate because it doesnt align with what their wives want. Men just want a mammy at the end of the day!

Top of the morning to ya, American based generic anti-everything spam bot that posts on Irish forums at 3am!

How is your Dear Leader these days? Still spray tanned and demented?

The algorithm will probably move on to select something about Brexit and how our EU membership is somehow a bad thing.

The modern man of today is a metro sexual man and he is pretty much pussy whipped by vamps with extra long nails, white teeth and over inflated egos full of plastic & chemical fillers & toxins. the fighting Irish did exist my grandfather was one of them they were masculine and they held their families dear and would do everything in their power to protect mother & children. Sadly today the vamps don't want the man as the global world tricked them into wage slavery and the nuclear family has all but disappeared. I mourn the passing of men like my grandfather they made everyone feel protected and he was a person of knowledge and to rely on. Women have ruined the world for themselves by degrading men they are destined to be wage slaves forever with their children raised in creches.

The holy show thing has been a recurring theme down through the years. Never before did a nation care so much about what others thought of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭mary 2021

I actually saw a lady out in the country side cycling a bicycle with her mask on.... we are indeed a fearful dominated nation. I actually admire the anti vaxers they still have a bit of courage !!

The GAA is built around getting the better of those in the next parish with games often resulting in actual fighting. Some of the biggest GAA fights happen at local level with spectators sometimes involved.

But during the compromise rules series, the Aussies generally got the better of our players during "schmozzles". Amateur vs pro athletes but still, if we were the fighting Irish we'd have given a better account of ourselves.

There is a certain amount of fighting and violence in the Irish soccer scene (Bohs and Rovers etc.) but barely worth a mention compared to football hooliganism and organised fighting in other countries.

As for our obedience and compliance, we are not very individualistic and are deferential to higher powers or at least won't engage in overt subordination and direct confrontation. Hence a mix of compliance, curtain twitching and cute hoorism.

We are a small rock on the fringes of Europe with very few natural resources. Ireland has never been involved in a major war or been a colonial power, quite the opposite. Now we find ourselves, in theory, one of the richest countries in the world but still have barely a token military.
