Rejigging our tax credits

    Hi all,

I'm hoping someone has the time and patience to help me. My situation is as follows:

I earn €50k approx. gross (take home is €36,400 and tax credit is 62.85), my other half is at home full time with our baby (lost her job last year just before finding out she was pregnant). We are still separately assessed, we are both novices when it comes to tax credits etc.

Is it best to get onto revenue to set us up for joint assessment or what would be best? Also, with the advised option what sort of increase in take home would I be looking at?

Thanks so much to all in advance

Does your partner have any PAYE income on which to be assessed? Last year's income? Revenue should be able to tell you straight away what reduction in tax,if any you can hope for.Have her PAYE slips from last employer available while on the phone-just to confirm PRSI number, last payment-she will need to be there,to confirm permission to discuss. They will be aware of any benefits she has been paid in any tax year-no need to add up the amounts.

Thanks so much for your help.

Would I have to be there when she rings them? Revenue are aware that we are married.

If your wife is a SAHP, with no income, your 2021 tax credits should be as follows:

    Married tax credit = 3300

PAYE employee tax credit = 1650

Home Carer tax credit = 1600

Total = 6550 pa, or 545.83 pm, or 125.96 pw

Send a myenquiry to Revenue using your Revenue MyAccount asking to be jointly assessed for 2022 onwards. Once that is done, login to your Revenue MyAccount and ensure you have claimed the home carers tax credit for 2022 and that all transferable credits are with you for 2022. Since you were seperatly assessed for 2021, both of you will need to file a separate return for 2021 via your respective Revenue MyAccounts. Once that is done send a myenquiry to Revenue asking that any unused credits/rate band from your spouse for 2021 be taken into account for your 2021 review.
