A name that probably wouldn't be immediately recognised by some over here, but famous American football coach and sports caster John Madden has died aged 85.

While I have personally have only watched a little but of nfl here and there. I am certainly more familiar with the video games back in the day.

    Rip.

I only know his name from the NFL games. Not sure if he was still broadcasting as his TV stint ended on NBC sometime back in 2008 (open to correction on date) but I was told by US work colleagues, he is considered something of a NFL dinosaur. Hardly surprising considering how much the game has changed since he coached.

Everyone becomes a dinosaur if they live long enough

And there's nothing new under the sun afaic

He seems to have been a very successful coach in his time. Takes skill to do it any time I'd say.

I am just greatful he did not work for RTE as a national month of mourning would be implemented (to be annually recycled) and we'll see far more of him dead than we ever did when he was alive.

    RIP John.

I still recall the bemused look from the librarian when I picked up "One knee equals two feet..." in my local branch.

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

I read that too. A super book. He has the best winning percentage in NFL history as HC. RIP
