why are aer lingus pulling out of cork airport, down to five destinations now?and why are aer lingus and ryanair screwing the public on the price of flights out of cork?is this another case of look after dublin airport at the expence of all othe airports in ireland ?oh and by the way if the people reading this don't know cork airport is run by the dublin airport authority makes a laughing of a government run by a corkman .....the only reason shannon is running at all is because ryanair are using it as a hub after cork won't let him use the old airport building as his hub in the south of the country[was run down and unsafe ]so mr. o leary gave them the two fingers and went to shannon who pay him for every passenger he brings through the airport ,the othe way round in ,guess where dublin .cork airport would be a thriving airport if it was to operate under its own management but were threatened with a massive depth if they went it alone ,typical of the gombeen politics in this country ,so i ask wheres the fairness in this country and why are the people in the south of the country being let down by a greedy system ,over to you!

the Airlines will fly if they get the passengers, obviously they have poor load factors. I guess the relative small population of cork can’t sustain the flights.

Cork is not the real capital that is why

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 postmahone

cork ,waterford and tipperary have a total population of 750,000 combined and these are the people who use cork airport ,and point taken but to fleece the traveling public using the airport is a sure way to drive it out of business ,fares to the same destinations with the same carriers out of shannon and dublin are a lot cheaper and thats down to dublin airport authority who are dicounting dublin passengers per person charge by 100% (free) and cork airport 30% so you can see the equality when one authority runs both airports .......and for jasus sake give the capital crap a rest ,this is about fairness ,abig airport doing well and a small airport trying to give a people a choice at a fair price ,nic eto hear your comments .

Waterford and tip are 90 minutes from Dublin. Motorways have changed things

need I say anymore!up to dublin to join thousands of people crammed into one airport to head out of the country for business and holidays ,while you can travel in leisure out of cork or shannon airport ,it makes the mind boggle as to why we are so far behind other countries when it comes to being smart and cutting down on our carbon out put ,yes lets drive a hunfred or two hundrew miles to sit in traffic ,pay tolls to fly to spain which is two hundred miles closer to cork airport ,we really think on our feet don't we ....and thats whats wrong with this country ,no thought put into doing the right thing and looking after all of the people ,instead of looking after the business and a few in the repulic of dublin .....by the way i,ve had to fly out of dublin airport my last few times ,its a fine airport great staff .....just thing of the cost of losing an airport ?

if more people from cork flew to Spain there would be a flight. Clearly the demand isn’t there.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair are private businesses…not state airlines so they will invest capital, time, staff, effort and aircraft to whichever airport/region can facilitate them with the most profit…

Population of Dublin and the east has exploded over the last decade…it’s growing, too fast in fact but that is for another thread…but it is why you are seeing…

let’s look at some stats, pre pandemic in July 2019, peak…

    Cork : 2261 flights

    Dublin : 22,110 flights

Cork is at 10.2% of what Dublin is…in peak July ‘19… why would they invest more aircraft, routes and staff there ?

I think I've flown out of Cork Airport once since the completion of the M9 and that was because I couldn't get a flight out of Dublin.

As someone living in Waterford, Cork just cannot compete with Dublin anymore. I'm in Dublin just as quick and on a lovely straight motorway. Couple that with cheaper flight prices...

When it comes to America, Cork just can't compete with Shannon, even though the road from Waterford is the worst journey one can take in the northern hemisphere. I'd much sooner travel to Cork than to Shannon but unfortunately not when I'm saving a couple of hundred on flights.

    Lockdown has ruined Cork airport.

They only ever offered limited routes anyway but now they seem to be strictly UK focused with barely nothing to mainland Europe.

On top of that they have the worst time slots for busy hubs like Amsterdam, either stupid o’ clock in the very early morning or too late in the evening….so frustrating.

Based in West I have decided to fly out of Cork airport for summer trip as don't want crowds, delays, queues in Dublin airport with children.

Never been to Cork airport before hope it works out ok

Ya mr o leary was told to sling his hook a few years ago when he tried to dictate to cork airport on service price and when he didn't get his way he went to shannon who were on their knees and had to take what they could get plus shannon is run by Shannon, cirk airport is run by the daa in dublin ,if cork was allowed to run itself it could then go out and get more airlines to use the airport, its that simple ,you know how it works in this country,if it doesn't work in dublin it will never be allowed to work anywhere else in the country....

I can't understand why the people of Cork aren't up in arms over DAA control.

    🙈🙉🙊

Its best to sit back and let them make a balls of things so the people of ireland can see them for what they are, this is why so much in this country is run badly they have dublin on the brain , you'd thing after a century of making the same mistakes they'd have learned something and local politicians sitting on the fence even micheal martin saying nothing shows you as long as the capital is kept satisfied hes got the job, selfish .

i see ryanair are fleecing the cork and shannon customers with mad prices ,fly out of shannon 7th june one way 345 euro lol and the people of cork are just whipped ass ,wouldn't get off their arses if the seat of their pants was on fire, dublin airport authority should be ashamed of the way they are treating the airport and staff in cork ,Micheal Martin and Micheal McGrath,Simon Coveney allowing it to happen ,the sooner they are voted out of power the better at least something will be done to remove the monopoly the daa has in cork airports affairs ......to be silent at this time is only leading to the eventual close of cork airport....remember where you heard it first! We are flying out of cork in september and it will be a pleasure no big queues ,no turning up three and half hours before your flight ,bar open for a nice holiday drink and food made to order nice and fresh what could be more inviting ,oh ya and we are flying with aerlingus and they were cheaper than ryanair [with all their bullshit add ons ] and lovely to see those smiling faces and great welcome on board ...........and for those diehards that commented who love going to dublin to fly off on holidays ,enjoy the long wait and delays ,have a nice day yall.

I'm booking flights from Cork to Spain for October and there's not much difference in price especially when you take into account cheaper car parking at Cork airport, the M50 toll.

Also after travelling through Dublin Airport recently it was not a pleasant experience though I was one of the lucky ones and got through security in 7 mins. There's barely any mention of the long queues down the corridor before you go down the stairs to come through immigration coming back through Dublin Airport.

The place was packed and not enough seating once through security so people left standing for hours or sitting on the floor, the food outlets ran out of food. The airport was also very grubby.

I was saying on an other thread here that half of the population have another option besides Dublin and that Dublin would lose business because of the delays... I expect that Dublin is marketed around Europe as the place to go... i wonder what proportion of all passengers are people coming here on hols or whatever... This is the only reason i can think of... I'm sure MM would have more traffic from Cork if it was feasible...

Well that’s a rant and a half. I’m struggling to understand your point?

that the DAA are ruining Cork yet you’re complaining about fares from Shannon which is run independently.

on the 7th of June you can fly from Cork to Bordeaux for €29 or Milan Bergamo for €15! Those are loss making fares in peak summer. If the people of Cork don’t use them they will lose them and the flights will move to Dublin.

I am genuinely interested in this topic but it looks like these are extreme examples at both ends...

I see dublin airport has eventually shot itself in the foot with the greedy daa thinking it is the only place on this island to fly from ,if the irish people could take off the blinkers and realise that I could see this happening last year and no one took any notice leads me to believe that you get exactly what you ask for when you don't listen ,enjoy flying out of dublin all those who don't listen to common sense .

in in addition to my earlier point… Cork has a small runway(s)….that would place limits on airlines Feck all parking for aircraft and limited passenger facilities..

not a single hanger that can be utilised to perform scheduled or unscheduled maintenance.

The above mentioned Bordeaux flight lands there after midnight though. There’s always a snag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 postmahone

Nobody cares about those things, all people want to do is get on a plane and get to there destination, theres room for over 40 aircraft to park in cork airport at one time. at Cork Airport?

“Wait times for passenger security screening at Cork Airport are consistent in the year to date; 97% of our passengers have a wait time of 10 minutes or less for security screening,” a spokesperson for Cork Airport told The Echo.

Oh ya forgot to say you can land a jumbo as its been done several times in the last few years since the runway was extended, but i suppose excuses are a poor substitute for reality .

    Cork airport runways

One runway (17/35) is 2,133m (6,998ft) long and is asphalt surfaced. The other runway (07/25) is 1,310m (4,298ft) long and built of concrete and asphalt.Runway 10/28, which is 2,637m long, has been the workhorse of the airport facilitating over four million aircraft movements since it opened 27 years ago,as you can see cork has two runways and dublin has one so turnaround time is slow,if you need anymore information do let me know 😁😁
