CH radiator pipe run query

Hi all,

I've built a single timber frame extension, but didn't put a duct in the slab for one rad away from the boiler. It's still a shell waiting for the internal studding. I was wondering if I could run the 2 pipes from the boiler, up to ceiling level, then run horizontal for about 20ft, then drop down to the rad. I could put it's own pump in the circuit if necessary. Too much trouble now to dig up the floor, and there are 2 doors in the way for a horizontal run. What size pipe is recommended these days.

Any advice is appreciated,

Mick, It sounds possible, but it becomes an air-trap, so you'll have to consider this when implementing it. But also have a read of this thread:

If you can avoid it, do. Fit it right once and never have a bother.

Thats my thread linked above. I've had plumbers out and they reckoned it was a delicate balancing problem - the house is plumbed like a 3 storey house but not right. Hot water cylinder was starving the upstairs heating. They throttled the feed to the heating coil and, lo and behold, the front rads upstairs started heating. But not for long. Gave up again after s week with nobody touching anything.

Now, after lots more tweaking, I've now got one front rad heating again, one is getting some water and the one in the master bedroom is totally stone cold. Seems like it's just going to be this dance all winter.

Is it not an option to valve-off the HW instead of turning down the flow? You'd need a programable controller then to heat the hot-water separately.

Possibly. Landlord not interested in spending money though.
