So with the latest numbers out tonight, do that many people really listen to it and what's the difference been a 'music station' and a 'hit music station' given (in Dublin) FM104 call themselves the number 1 hit music station...

Radio licencing in Dublin is clownish, Sunshine 106.8 are now successful but only because they doing what Q102 was licenced to do.

Basically, as I understand it, a rather complicated license was issued to Dublin's Country 106.8 - part country, part easy-listening and part Irish. There was a lot of crossover country music in the early days. After a few years, reflecting its music mix, the station was renamed Dublin's Country Mix 106.8. Eventually, after trying a few times, it was allowed to change its name to Sunshine 106.8. It morphed into essentially an easy-listening music station.

Before that license, there was one for an easy-listening or light music station. Lite FM were awarded it. After four years, it rebranded itself as Q102, with an emphasis on upbeat music. Sunshine 106.8 is now the station that Lite FM started off as!

  • Stations should be run as stated in their application..If they cant make it work, they shouldnt be given the option to change..This is what has ruined radio, and why they all sound the same..They all are number 1,and have the best music mix

Does poor Joe Harrington ever get a break??

I think Joe gets a great break his shows are mostly pre-reorded, in fact a lot of nighttime & weekend shows are pre-recorded.

I’ve heard a lot of shops & taxi drivers listening to Sunshine, it’s a nice & easy station to have on in the background. Lovely audio to.

Sunshine's licence isn't one bit complicated nor does it clash with Q102. Sunshine holds a niche or specialist interest broadcast licence, similar to the one that was issued to Phantom. Q102 have a general licence for music based broadcasting aimed at a 35-55 audience. While their output was easy listening in it's Lite FM days, this wasn't a licence stipulation but a choice of the station itself.

That Sunshine's content and musical output is anything but niche is another story for another thread. Suffice to say, their programming output fulfils their remit.

is it true to say that just the monday to friday breakfast show and drivetime show are the only live shows on Sunshine?

Sunshine seriously need to change the 300 songs they've been playing for the past 15 years

The Paddy Cole show should be called  The Joe Harrington show featuring Paddy Cole, as  it's nothing more than Harrington having a chat with Cole and Harrington is the one who picks all the music. I remember the Sunday after Big Tom died, Harrington only allowed Cole play one of his tracks, 4 country roads of course.

Paddy Cole is an odd one out in the line up. In earlier days, when Dublin's Country still made up part of the station name, there were a few presenters with more country music inclinations.

Isn't Paddy Cole still a shareholder in Sunshine?

His nephew is Tom Cole Jnr. on Sunday nights Sunshine Swing

I didn't realise that he was a shareholder in the station or that * Tom Cole Jnr. is related to him. The latter's show is another of those outliers.

*It should have occurred to me given Paddy's own musical background!

Ya..... its my go to on Alexa. Nice 'n' Easy all the way!!

But Keith Duffy selling me Tyres and calling me 'Bud' in that advert is starting to grind my gears!!! Only a small thing though!!

Sunshine openly boast about being the number one music station for over 35s in Dublin but surely this proves that they are in no way a "special interest" "niche" service? Such a service was never indented to be "number 1" anything.

Sunshine is non-offensive and a beacon of hope in this dreadful world. Here's hoping it goes from strength to strength.

The JNLRs usually decide on who gets to say they're number one. I think FM104 lost that title though and Spin overtook them this year but FM104 haven't given it up.

It makes a mockery of things when you have more than one radio station claiming to be "number 1"

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It depends on their definition of "number 1": certain age groups for example.
