Thermostatic radiator valves - getting the most from them....?

Working from home and using the gas central heating much more, I'm trying to get the most from the system.

    I have a few questions...

    1. Some of my TRVs don't appear to work anymore. The radiator is full on regardless of the TRV setting (1-5). Can I replace the TRV without having to replace the valve it's attached to and the one at the other end of the radiator?
    2. On the question of how TRVs work; say I have TRVs on radiators in two rooms both set to 3. Now, let's say one room is colder than the other. Will the valve in the colder room turn off less often to maintain the temperature?
    3. Is the TRV shutting off when the radiator has reached a given setting, or is it shutting off when the room temperature equates to the chosen valve setting?
    4. I want bedrooms to be habitable, but cooler than downstairs. Any advice on settings appreciated.
    5. What is a good make of replacement valve?
    6. Any other advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

    D.

A stuck valve pin is the most common reason for a valve not working.
    2. On the question of how TRVs work; say I have TRVs on radiators in two rooms both set to 3. Now, let's say one room is colder than the other. Will the valve in the colder room turn off less often to maintain the temperature? Yes
    3. Is the TRV shutting off when the radiator has reached a given setting, or is it shutting off when the room temperature equates to the chosen valve setting? Mostly the room, but they are not exactly the same on every rad and need to be adjusted a bit each day until you get it to a comfortable setting.
    4. I want bedrooms to be habitable, but cooler than downstairs. Any advice on settings appreciated. As above
    5. What is a good make of replacement valve? Any of the ones that they stock in a proper plumbing shop are likely to be fine.
    6. Any other advice appreciated. You will find lots of youtube videos on freeing a stuck valve, but if you are not sure about not causing a leak, get in a plumber.
