2kw oil filled radiator question

    I have this free-standing Dimplex heater.

    There are two heat switches. One will give you 1400W. If you flip both switches you get 2kw.

    I always flip both switches, and then the heater cycles on and off according to the thermostat setting. Question I have is, why would anyone ever use the 1400W switch? I don't think that would result in any energy saving because then the thermostat would keep the heater running longer in order to heat the room to the desired temperature. Am I missing a trick here? This is my only source of heating and my electricity is high in the winter.

    I guess that during a warmish day 1400w would be enough but on a colder day 2000w or more might be needed. The nearer you can match the output to the demand, the less switching the thermostat has to do and the more consistent the temperature.


    If I exaggerate this scenario it might make it clearer. Supposing it also had a 20,000w output (heating the same room) you can imagine the mad switching the thermostat would be doing and the large temperature overruns.

    Most Irish houses use a ring mains (or one upstairs and another for downstairs) So outside the kitchen you have a limit of 30A. If you have two of them in the house you might consider setting them both to 1400W as a big hairdryer or iron or kettle or fan heater on top might trip the mains.

    Fan heaters are great for the initial burst of heat or just to get the chill out of a room and Aldi had some recently. They usually have a 1000W / 2000W switch which makes more sense than 1400W / 2000W

    I have a 2kw Dimplex oil filled rad

    setting 0 = OFF

    setting 1 = 800 watts

    setting 2 = 1200 watts

    setting 3 = 2000 watts

    No problem in running in setting 1 or 2 continuously with rad stat turned up fully but setting 3 will only average 1500 watts (measured) with stat up fully as another safety stat cuts in/out the power at a measured rad surface temp of 110C.

    setting 1 rad surface temp is 72C and setting 2 is 96C.
