Query: Tax relief on college fees for unemployed person

I've been out of work since last year and have recently started a part-time third level college course that will last for 4 years. The fees are about 5k per year and I was advised by a classmate to claim tax credits for this with Revenue. However, I don't understand what this will mean because I'm not working and therefore not paying tax. The classmate (who is working) seems to think that we will all get about €700 from Revenue.

Please could someone explain if my classmate is correct, ie that we will get a tax refund? Or does this only apply to classmates who are working? And if I don't get any benefit because I'm unemployed, is there a way to claim a rebate/refund on the fees paid?

Sorry for any confusion, I'm totally clueless about this!

Yes, You have to pay tax to get tax refunded. However, if someone else is paying your fees they can claim the tax credit.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Thanks a mill. For those of us who are unemployed, would we be able to claim money back with sites like Taxback etc.?

Again, you need to have paid tax in the year you incurred whatever expense you want to claim tax relief on. Taxback don't do anything magical. They do exactly what you can do yourself via your own Revenue MyAccount for free.

If you haven't already done it, login to your Revenue MyAccount and file a tax return for 2020. If you are due a refund from any tax you paid in 2020 it it will be refunded to you. Keep in mind some welfare payments are taxable.
