How do I remove the control knobs on a Zanussi gas cooker. I was under the impression that they just pull straight out but apparently not, as I has tried that.

I had a cooker (not Zanussi) that the knobs pulled straight off, then eventually got an more recent version of the same cooker and the knobs would not come off at all. The suppliers sounded horrified that knobs might be made to come off, 'it would not be safe'!
