RUST UNDER CAR

Hi All,

My 03D Focus just managed to pass the NCT this week but the inspector said it was 50/50 mainly due to rust faking badly from the underbelly.

He asked me if I live near the sea (I do) that sea salts is probably not helping your case.

I was wondering if there is any spray that can help protect the underside from rusting further?

Any help would be great.

Depending how much rust is on the car you'd have to get rid of the rust first then protect it from rusting again. On a 03 focus it might not be worth your while doing

Is it the body or sub frame? One is possible, the other might be more than its worth.

As @PsychoPete said you need to treat the rust problem first then apply the protection/preventative measures otherwise you'll end up with "hidden" rust building up under any coating and you won't see the harm being done.

If it's the sub frame it will have to be removed to treat then you'll have to change all control arms and bushings on it. The same happened my mazda 6 last week but the nct mechanic decided to put it off the road, with the high tax and all the control arms connected to the frame and any secondhand frame as bad as it I had no choice but to scrap it.
