Replace old water softener

    Hi,

I have a old salt based softener like the pic below. It's been problematic from the start and is a pain having to buy and transfer in big 20kg bags of salt every few months.

I'm thinking of replacing it with the combimate https://www.telfords.ie/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=6050

    Is it that straightforward?

Replacing the softener with the combimate shouldn't be too hard and it does have some favourable reviews from the uk.

I found this explaination on a uk plumbing forum "The primary effect is to coat the inside of the pipework, heat exchangers, water heaters etc with a protective coating that reduces the level of scale build up. A secondary effect is that the small amount of phosphate makes the water easier to lather with soap. In essence, it's the same as adding Calgon to the water supply, but in a continuous, low level, dose."

I have a water softener myself but id would be sceptical about whether its as good as it makes out. The Fleck control valve you have installed are supposed to be fairly reliable as softeners go.

Just seeing if you went ahead with the combi-mate? Looking at getting one myself

No I didnt in the end. From my reading around, the general consensus was that the salt based softeners have a much better effect than the combimate.

Just FYI: you can get 10kg bags in some Woodies and B&Q branches. Much easier to move to car / car to house.
