Smoke, but where !

So have this problem with Volvo D2 that's the 1.6D 4162T

It's recently developed some exhaust type smell in cabin and also there is a small bit of smoke that comes up from the rear of the engine under acceleration. Not consistent but it's there on the odd acceleration.

Have removed injectors and cleaned ports with injector cleaning tools and cleaned up the ports with the nylon brushes etc . Replaced copper washers and resealed. Assumed there was a leak on injector 4 or 3. But its still there. Noticed the smoke is coming from somewhere under the fuel filter. It's an exhaust type smell from combustion. But unsure where from.

Have attached pics of another vehicle same engine from the net. The top of engine and a shot of the rear of the engine looking at it from the drivers view point .

Any ideas on possible locations to look. I know it's a how long is a Length of string question. But it's a common enough engine perhaps others have had similar issue.

I've circled in green on the rear pictures the location where the smoke eminates from . Obviously can only see it from above as engines in car.

I believe the circled green is actually the ERG valve assembly. Would presume that is the most likely source of issue ?

If there is somewhere smoke leak, that area should be darker. If you have, use borescope. Honestly the smoke definition is bit hard, it can be anything starting from PCV to EGR. Oil leak can too generate unpleasant smokes. Engine warms up and all the leaked oil burns/evaporate slowly.

Can only assume the manifold seal on the egr isn't working. It's two bolts holding it on just an absolute tight space to work in. I will have to crack on and take a look

Be sure to use the right tools. If you round the bolts, it makes the job only harder. Lubrication and vibration is your best friends

So took out the fuel filter and housing to get more access to EGR. Found the fault nice build up of carbon around manifold area. Of the two bolts meant to hold it flush and the gasket flush. The top one was missing .

    Easy fix. Happy days.
