Travel Insurance cover while on a cruise ship ?

My wife had a medical emergency while on a cruise ship. She was admitted to the ship's hospital and the bill came to €10,000.

She was later admitted for tests in New York before she was cleared to fly home.

She had health cover with Irish Life and travel cover with Blue Insurance.

During the incident, Irish Life said they would not cover her treatment on the ship as they regarded her as being in a clinic.

We had to pay the bill and it took months before we were recouped.

The Travel Insurance had to cover the costs on the ship as Irish Life would only cover her on "solid ground"

Want to take out a new multi trip policy and don't want to get caught between two stools again.

Went to fill out the VHI policy on line. It seemed perfect as long as you has cover for €65,000 abroad on your own policy.

Rang VHI to clarify and explained previous history.

It appears that VHI will cover you abroad, but not on a cruise ship, if you happen to ask that particular question.

    Any recommendations please ?

    Got cover with Chill.

They give cover on a "sea vessel"

    It's underwritten by Mapfre.

    Very good to know, thanks.

I think I know the answer to this one before I even ask, but as stupid as it is :

if I’ve already booked a cruise in the US in December and flights, is it too late to take out travel insurance? Or is it still valid covering me for this trip and anything that happens over there…
