Immersion Element Replacement - Draining Required?

The sink element in our immersion tank has stopped working (although the bath element is still ok). I read a few articles online which suggested connecting a hose to the drain valve but a quick look does not reveal a drain valve on ours

If I pick up a replacement (I'm assuming* it is 23"), am I correct I thinking that I can replace the element without using a hose but by simply turning off the cold inlet and running the hot tap downstairs?

Is there any other risks in doing this (obviously electricity would be turned off and I'm fairly handy at DIY)?

• the only info i can see regarding the element on the cap is Thermtek 2kW & 3kW. At a guess, the tank is about 1m tall

If its a top mounted dual immersion then you don't have to drain it, shut off the cold water supply to the cylinder and open a hot tap, it will then remain full but not overflowing and helps to keep the cylinder from moving while removing the element(s).

This is often one of those jobs better left to a plumber. The usual pitfalls are twisting the area around the flange or having a leak afterwards. Also wiring can sometimes cause problems.

BTW you need to be sure it's the element and not the switch that's the problem.
