Can anyone recommend one. I use shears to do most of the job but trying to lower the height with shears is a handful and hard work.

What type of hedge. Species, length height etc.?

It's an evergreen hedge with green apple coloured leaves. It looks like a grisolena hedge. Not sure of the spelling. Some of the branches are thick. It's about 10ft in height. I need to get it down to 6ft.

To take the hedge down by 4ft you will need a lopper and maybe a pruning saw for the thicker branches.

A hedge trimmer either electric or petrol driven will keep it in order once you get it down to the height you want it.

Agreed. Shears or a trimmer won't do that job. It's a one off job and a standard electric timer will keep it in check thereafter.
