Insufficient storage space- how to resolve?

    Hello,

I got one of my parents a Redmi 7A which is currently running MIUI Global 12.0.2. It has 2Gb RAM and Octa-core 2.01GHz CPU. The Android version is 10 (QKQ1.191014.001). It has 16Gb internal storage and 1Gb SD card.

It has been continually complaining that there is less than 1.5Gb RAM available and the notifications are driving my parent crazy. There is very little data on the phone - I have diverted WhatsApp to the SD card. Both browsers have their histories cleared and set to clear on exit too.

I can't see what else there is to clear, but obviously there is stuff somewhere which is pushing up the storage to the limit for phone usage. The storage space chart shows System is consuming 6.17Gb, apps 0.98gb, Images 5.16Mb, Audio 194Kb, Video 0B, APKs 0B, Docs 17.33Kb and Other 7.55Gb.

I've no idea what 'Other' entails. How can I get the storage size down to a more suitable size that won't inhibit phone performance and prevent the continuous warning messages from appearing?

    Thanks,

Could "other" be back ups stored on the phone? Check the settings and id delete them if theres any especially if theres nothing too important on the phone.

16gb on phone is going to leave you chasing this issue until you upgrade in my experience

    Storage @ drive.google.com is unused.

As snoopsheep says, the phone is pushing it for minimal spec/storage.

Open the menu and search backups. Should show the option for viewing backed up files.

Then the "other" files are likely files used by Android/Miui - there would be no way to recover that space. 16gb storage and 1gb of RAM is too small to be running a smart phone these days. The 7a was a basic phone running Android 9 when it came out. Even then the specs wouldn't have been great. Its going to be a case of constantly deleting items/clearing caches in order to keep the phone operable. Might not be what you want but id look at upgrading the phone especially if its already driving them mad.

Wouldn't be so bad, but it was their first smartphone and there is next to nothing on it.

If there are very few apps on it you could you try restoring to factory settings

I hear ya. Unfortunately the specs are basic and not all smart phones are equal. This will do basic tasks but eventually you end up frustrated with space/slowness issues.
