Difference in quote for exact same model car!

So before going to buy a second hand VW Golf, I priced around for some quotes online.

In order to obtain a quote online, I used a reg number off an advert which is the exact same model of car I purchased. Today I tried to insure the car I purchased and the quote is €150 more expensive! I edited the quote and tried the reg of the golf from advert again and I get the original quote. Confused!

I tried to call them to see why two identical model cars have different quotes ... only thing different is registration number.. but after 32mins of listening to automated messages I hung up and decided to ask Boards instead! ;)

Any was shed some light as to the reason for this? By the way I have checked thoroughly to make sure both cars are identical and they are, same engine, same power, same no. of seats... even the milage is nearly identical, 2500km more on golf from advert.

Best bet is to ring them and ask them to change the details in the quote.

I'm assuming the system reckons its more or less a new quote.

You bought the car and now need insurance immediately so it adds on percentage.

Same principal if you look for insurance one month before renewal and day before renewal.

Just off the phone to them! Head is fried.

I asked them to change the reg number in my original quote, but I was told there was going to be an increase in premium. When I asked why, as both cars are the exact same model, I was told there is over 200 checks done per veichle and veichle history can cause a variaton in quotes! We went back and forth for a bit as I wanted me information, but I was getting no where, eventually I asked to speak with a supervisor in which I was placed on hold only for the line to go dead after 5mins.

by the way, I heard about that before, that selecting a policy start day 2-3 weeks ahead can give a cheaper quote, but after playing around with online calculations it seems thats not always the case! It made no difference with Liberty, Axa or FBD

Got a love car insurance shopping :)

Ring again in the morning and hope for someone else and be polite is all I can say ;)

What I do when buying a new car, id ring them up and give the specs of a car id be interested in buying a get a quote that way. But that's very time consuming.

Sometimes the specs if similar sized engine cars are different. There is often different engines, same size, but different output power. Check for example cartell free to see if details are identical. Sometimes trim levels are different such as power steering, airbags, bells and whistles. Often quotes are based on the driver profile they have for that car. Then again quotes are often crazy with no logic. They often penalise you if you are close to renewal date, dual pricing means they can quote what they like to existing customers and give new customers different price for same thing.

Just shop around every year, try brokers too, but brokers can screw you too, so shop around and hope it's reasonable each year.

Had the exact same problem was import a UK vw cc and used reg of exact same car on done deal (Irish car from new) to get a quote . UK car even went on Irish reg was €300 more to insurance . Got same rubbish went I phone them up about it we do over 200 check on the car and there not same car he was saying .we all knew it was same car exact spec only difference was it was UK import but he point blank refuse to admit that was only difference. Think it AXA insurance. I bet you're car is UK import

Like said above, if the car was imported from UK the quote will go up. I don't understand why, but I have seen it too many times.

Also, claims history for an Irish registered car. Unlike in the UK, when a claim is made in an Irish registered car it is not made public, so only insurers will know it from their databases.
