Alcohol delivered from abroad. Notice of seizure from Revenue

Hello all,

I signed up to a beer club from abroad, 6 beers delivered from an EU brewery every month. The latest batch has been seized by Revenue referencing Section 125 of the Finance Act 2001.

There's nothing in the notice about how to proceed if there is anything that can be done. I'm not too pushed about getting the beer (although will pay whatever duty is added if necessary). Not sure if it's been sent back to the brewery or sitting in a Revenue office.

Also wondering will there be any follow up from Revenue about it? I've cancelled the subscription anyway, seemed too good to be true.

If they haven't offered you an option to pay the duty (they are not required to, but sometimes have offered other posters the chance), that's it. Its gone, won't be sent back either.

If its a once-off you won't hear anything further. Just be aware that basically every site outside of Ireland is not set up to sell alcohol in to Ireland.

This is probably a stupid question but why doesn't free movement of goods apply here?

Not to be totally lazy, I did google it and it seems you should be able to import alcohol if VAT was paid?

It never has to exciseable products except when carried on/with your person. Alcohol, tobacco, perfumes (albeit I'm fairly sure our excise on those is zero).

We have some of the highest alcohol and tobacco excise rates in Europe so have more to gain by enforcing this. Comparatively other countries have less to gain so you hear of it happening less there.
