Puppy Barking

    Hi

Just after some pointers and advice. We have a 1 yr old Shih Tzu. Typical Shih Tzu - playful, loving and stubborn. Just like our last boy.

He doesn't bark at people, but has lately taken to barking very aggressively at next door's dog, who's an old guy - blind, deaf and generally just minding his business in his garden. Nothing happens - our dog can't get to him, and this seems to have happened suddenly. No amount of calling, chasing or squeakers will get him in!

I'm wondering why this might be and what we can do to stop it? I think it might be frustration the other dog can't respond and play with him, but want to put a stop to it, before anything happens. I try not to chase him, as the dog will then think it's a game. We think putting him on an extended lead, and treating him when he displays the right behaviour might be an idea, but open to any others.

    Any ideas/tips welcome!

    TIA :)

How is his recall when the other dog isn't around?

It's not too bad, but we have to use a squeaker to get his attention. The dog has the Shih Tzu trait of hearing what he wants to hear! If he comes in first time, he gets a treat. But when he sees the other dog it's like tunnel vision!

Could you ask the neighbour if the dogs could have a play date? Maybe once they meet, the excitement of not being able to get to eachother will go away and hopefully barking will stop.
