Reconditioning a turbo

    Have a 2014 Octavia desiel. 280000km.
    It's making a droning/grinding sound.

Mechanic says it's the hearings in the turbo so best option is to recondition it.
He has given me a price and a timeframe.

My question is roughly what should this cost me based on others experience.

I hope the turbo hearings are gone because it wouldn't like you talking about it like that.

On a serious note, yes reconditioned would be best option as reconditioned means everything faulty will be replaced by brand new parts and should operate like a brand new turbo. 2nd hand from breakers would be cheapest but most risk involved. Cost of reconditioned should be around €300. Breakers yard maybe half of that, and new its about €700-€800

I normally recondition my own ones and will have a post or 2 in the diy thread on one in the future when I get the parts I need/chra machined and it's all balanced up (I won't be doing that last part)

If I were you, I'd source a good 2nd hand unit based on it's condition in person. Check for lateral and side to side movement; a very small side to side movement is acceptable, any lateral (facing you towards the housing) is a no-no. Something out of a low mileage crashed vehicle would be the first place to start

A scrapyard I used to work in had pallets of VW TDI turbos, but that's years ago for PD engines, drop me a PM if you want the breakers name

I've seen too many reconditioned units in the past with short lifespans or having to be exchanged as they're faulty

Not sure where you're located, but I had a turbo reconditioned on my Audi Allroad last year. It cost €200. I got these guys to do it https://turbo-tech.ie/. They're situation behind Dublin airport.
