Extending a water pipe

There’s a 0.85cm polypipe in my garden and a tap attached. It also says 1/2” on the outside of the pipe so I wonder is the internal dim 1/2” vs 0.85cm (which I measured with a digital micrometer) as this equates to 0.335 of an inch so am totally confused :-)

Anyone know what the industry standard is on this, trying to determine fittings for it?

Note: it's convention to measure imperial pipes as internal diameter and metric as external.

1/2" means a pipe with an external diameter that's equivalent to a copper pipe of internal diameter of half an inch.
In other words, the thing called a 1/2" pipe is 14.7mm
When dealing with fittings and what-not it's only really the external diameter that's important.

off the top of my head though, 14.7mm pex will have an internal diameter of more like 10-11 mm?

I would hazard a guess that it's a bog standard half inch hydrodare pipe. All fittings are available off the shelf in your local plumbers suppliers.
