We are looking for parents (mothers and fathers) who have tried to get help for teenagers (12 to 17) who self-harm. We are recruiting several parents so we would particularly welcome applications from parents from a range of backgrounds. This includes parents who are immigrants to Ireland, parents from minority ethnic groups in Ireland (including Travellers), and parents of teenagers who are gay, bisexual or questioning their gender identity. We are looking for parents from all parts of Ireland.

    Tasks:
You will be asked to come to two meetings over the course of a year, each meeting will be about one hour and a half long. In the first meeting (which will probably be on Zoom) we will describe the research project and talk about how we plan to contact parents and what we are going to ask them. We will ask for your opinion on our plans and your suggestions. We will then ask you to a second meeting (online or in person) when we have gathered all the data and get your impressions of our findings and how you think we should interpret them. We do not have the funding to pay the members of the panel, however we will be sending a €50 All4One gift voucher to all participants after the second meeting. We will also cover travel costs for any face-to-face meeting. The volunteer will gain experience of committee work by being part of an advisory panel, will learn about research and how research is interpreted. The volunteers will also have a personal interest in the topic because of their experience as parents.

    Time:
The total time commitment for this role is 4 hours, 90 minutes for each meeting and 1 hour of training. We will arrange the meetings and training at a time that will suit the group of people selected as volunteers.

    Locations:
First meeting will be online (via Zoom), the second meeting in the School of Psychology, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4 (travel costs will be reimbursed). The aim of the UCD School of Psychology is the undertaking of internationally recognised research of the highest standard in a variety of psychological fields.

    Required:
Personable skills, Intermediate level of English.

Volunteers will be Provided with the Following Supports: Support/ advice/ recognition, Initial induction and training, and Reimbursement of expenses Suitable for Volunteers with the Following Challenges: Physical Disability, Sensory Disability, and/or Mental Health Difficulties.

    Expiry Date: 24/06/2021
