Belarus has sparked international outrage by intercepting a Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius carrying Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend.

The EU and free world will not be happy with this.

Belarus's strongman President Alexander Lukashenko sparked international outrage by dispatching a fighter jet Sunday to intercept a Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius carrying Protasevich, 26, and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, 23.

Putin is backing his ally Belarus.

Mod - there is a fairly extensive thread in the Aviation forum on this topic already however posts about general politics are not permitted in it

For this reason this thread can stay open and the diverting of the flight, as well as the arrest of Roman Protasevich and Sofia Sapega can be discussed here. Stay on topic though, no generalizations or whataboutery

Just to say, you do realise this has been reported and much discussed already.

    Not new news.

Did this not happen about 4 days ago? The Eu has already banned flights from Belarus from its airspace and international carriers are now avoiding Belarusian airapace and not flying to the country

Europe needs to get its **** together on some sort of security/defence pact and Ireland should be in it.

Europe needs to understand that they're being attacked in the first place. There's also the small problem of certain current and former European leaders being already in the pocket of the Russians.
