Mondeo shaking

    So I have a 2009 mondeo diesel, it has high mileage 340km, the flywheel was going so the car was shakey etc , got a brand new clutch and flywheel put in. It improved it a good bit but it was still shakey when driving and a knock coming from what sounds like the wheel when i hit a bump. the mechanic said I need a shock on the front and a track rod end ,

    So my first question is would those issues cause the car to be not driving smoothly ?

    Anyway I went and bought a second hand set of alloys 17inch, when I got them balanced and put on all the vibrating/shakyness just got a lot worse , the tracking seems to be out since aswel.

    Can anyone educate me and tell me what’s going on ? I kind of regret fixing it now I could have bought a new car with the amount of money I’ve spent on it so far. Thanks

    Well if your mechanic says it's suspension, I assume it could be it.

    Bigger, lower profile tires can make it feel worse.

    Is the engine shaky as well?

    I’m hoping the shock and track rod end sort it tomorrow.

    Well they are standard Ford alloys , 17inch. The old ones were standard 16inch steel wheels.

    No I don’t think the engine is shaky to be honest it’s hard to tell

    Those issues would 100% cause the car to not drive smoothly, worn shock could be bottoming out over bumps and causing the knocking as the piston strikes the valve, also track rod end with a decent amount of play would also knock when going over bumps. Bigger alloys usually decrease ride quality, so I'd say they are just amplifying the defects that are already there. For a car with 340km it doesn't sound too bad, I'll swap you my i40 for it and you'll know what's bad then lol

    Cheers for that. He actually replaced 2 shocks and 2 links , not track rod ends. I haven’t driven it much since I got it back but it seems to be much better now Tbf

    Just to add to your woes... It's also possible that one or more of the alloys might have a slight buckle.

    I get the impression that you don't trust your mechanic. However, it is recommended to always change shocks in pairs so don't assume the mechanic is scamming you when they mention it.

    Ah no i understand that , it’d be pointless to change one side. I’d say the wheels are the problem unfortunately

    Have you still got the old wheels? Stick them on the front and see how it drives.
    If the new ones balanced fine then I reckon they are probably ok.

    Is the shake constant or only starts at a particular speed?

    If the new ones balanced fine then I reckon they are probably ok.

    Still have them , will try that. But as soon as I changed them to the alloys I noticed a considerable difference for the worse, that’s before the shocks were done though

    No it’s at any speed, but like I said it’s much better since the few bits were changed, still feel it though

    Could be a wheel but if it was that bad i would hope whoever ballanced them eould pick up on it.
    Steel belt in the tyre maybe broken.
    More common than you would think.
    I would try to establish if it gets worse with speed. Engine revs and Road speed.do them separately. I.E get up to speed and coast in neutral. If it is the same vibration that would eliminate engine/drtivetrain
    As suggested swopping the old wheels in is a good start also.

    I tried that today , sped up to like 110km and put it in neutral and it didn’t change anything. Also it doesn’t get worse with speed. I don’t know if this makes sense either but I can kind of hear one of the wheel spinning when I’m driving slow in traffic , it’s hard to explain

    OP have you had the tracking done yet?

    I've just replaced two front springs on a Focus. I thought I might get away with the tracking as I'd had it done within the last 6 months. However even though I didn't have to touch the track rod ends the tracking was miles out afterwards. Slight vibration and pull to the left. Anway £30 for tracking and that was sorted. Drives straight and no vibration.

    Wake me up when it's all over.
