    Hi all,

Just planted a few potted young Red Robin for hedging. They're not much more than 1ft and wondering how long to leave them to establish prior to their first pruning?

There are different opinions about the best stage to start pruning young hedge plants. The photo shows a plant that is already fairly bushy and if its only about 1foot tall I'd only take off the odd shoot that might be going off in an odd direction and leave it until next year to trim more. Try avoid the hedge getting wider at the top than lower down as this can lead to bare patches further down on the plants where shade from above makes it less likely for the hedge plants to put the effort into producing leaves there.

To add to the above Photinia don't respond well to being pruned back beyond the existing leaf growth, so trim back any particularly leggy stems now to encourage bushiness.
