I guess I could expand my question to the following:

When trying to figure out what alt coins in particular to invest in - where do you start?
A million youtube videos, reading white papers, basic analysis of market cap etc....
All incredibly time consuming and dense reading, not to mention trying to figure out who to believe etc...

Something like token metrics at least seems to bundle some useful stats together in one place in order to help with judgement calls and so on
I'm not naive enough to think it's any sort of silver bullet and of course you are trusting analysis of people / machines that you don't know or know anything about but it may be easier to verify their stats than trawl through each and every altcoin

you have got to start somewhere and I find there's an overwhelming amount of info out there to sift through

So how to you folks go about your research? and am I just wasting my money with something like token metrics?

ICO Drops. Most listings will be scams or failures but you can burrow through and find devs attached to known projects who're now attached to new projects. Generally a good sign when something like Lukso pops up and you find out it's the pet project of the guy who created the ERC-20 standard. Down 75% in USD right now but still currently over 10x for the ETH I put in.

Coinlist features projects early and sometimes distributes airdrops on behalf of them - everybody who gave them an email with the Dfinity airdrop got an overhyped $30k boost the day that dropped on Coinbase (but that kind of project is a rarity in terms of scope). Now worth less than $15k. Hopefully it'll continue down. Should only be worth a few billion at most given it has no renowned site/s immediately swapping to it imo but the market dictates and adds a zero to everything.

Recently Added on CMC or CoinGecko. You'll miss out on the ICO gains if any (not everything goes up) but besides the 90+ scamcoins named after food or dogs on BinanceChain (which as this bull has shown can moon) you'll find the newest tokens hitting exchanges - a lot of the time being dumped by those ICO investors but possibly still good value if you're thinking longer term and have made yourself aware of their roadmap.
