I brought in my 2000 Yaris for its NCT and it failed on a corroded rear brake line and was given a fail dangerous due to a hole in the floor. The NCT inspector told me it was a formality and that the car wasn't really unsafe to drive and that he'd left the keys in it for me. He never put the fail dangerous sticker on it either. I did drive it home, but I'm not really sure if I was supposed to, and I'm wondering if it will need to be towed in for the retest?

Have a look at the fail sheet - it'll tell you if it was a fail dangerous or not. You make the call whether to drive it home but I guess you drove it there with the same defects...

It's a fail dangerous on extensive corrosion. I've bought some plate and will rectify it this weekend.

Fail dangerous cars shouldn’t be driven on the roads but no one is going to stop you

Highly unlikely to be stopped, but I imagine if you were involved in any sort of accident you would find yourself on the wrong side of the law and quite possibly your insurance would be void as most insurers require that the vehicle is road worthy.

Once I have the rot dealt with, I should be in the clear again though?

Yes, but if you are bringing it back for retest make sure to leave the weld & plate unpainted for them to inspect or they will fail it.

If you go back outside of the retest time for another full test you can paint/schutz/whatever over it.

How big is the hole in the floor?

How big is the hole in the floor?

Less than an inch square. Might widen up a bit when I take the flap wheel to it.
