Transgender Kiwi Weighlifter Olympics

New Zealand weightlifter who transitioned from male to female in her mid-30s is cleared to compete in the Olympics. Previously placed on the podium at World Championships so not inconceivably a medal prospect.

Many female athletes known to be unhappy about this but are being told to pipe down.

Of all sports, growing into adulthood as a male confers massive physical advantages to transitioned weightlifters. More power to her being who she wants to be, but for the purposes of Olympic weightlifting and fairness, should be classified as a male - as hurtful as that may be to many.

    Easy gold for New Zealand.

It’s an absolute joke. Some of the propaganda around this is now suggesting that transwomen have no physical advantages over women etc and sport is a moot point. Which is why this person took up the sport at 35 odd and is now smashing elite records. The reality is that there are now multiple examples in multiple sports of this being an issue and it’s only going to get more prominent.

Imagine being a woman who spent a huge part of your life training in a sport only to be displaced by someone who transitioned, bringing with them a huge set of physical advantages? And then being called a bigot for stating the obvious?

Unfortunately this thread is likely to descend into chaos soon, but as someone who supports trans rights (and through work, was the first person a trans woman once came out to), you can't square this circle. There is no way this is fair to the other athletes, and fairness has to be one of the core principles of sport.

Brilliant, mens domination of female sports continues

While these things need to be regulated better the competition will be probably won by some Russian with plenty illegal male hormones in her body.

I can see how resolving trans issues is important in contact sport but one more dodgy athlete in weight lifting won't make much of a difference.

Who cares? They’re all doped up anyway.

Should change the name to XX and XY chromosome instead of male/female.

It would put an end the this nonsense once and for all.

The Japanese won't take kindly to it.

A doped up biological woman is still at a disadvantage if competing against a biological male who transitioned after puberty. If they're all doping chances are the transgender woman is too, so that's a moot point.
