I think Paul uses bold statements that will purposely incite the public to garner attention for his business, and it works. I believe he a media/marketing company Outrage Marketing..

Whether or not people are happier sitting at home on the pup payment is something I don't know.

Anyone I know who is on it cannot wait to get back into their jobs. They miss working and know that they will have to pay back the pup payment once they are back in FT work.

The guy's an attention whore, simple as. I couldn't even be bothered reading about his latest cry for attention

When did it become a "new development" for minimum wage business owners in vastly overpriced cities to struggle to staff jobs? In fairness I suppose the post does say he's prepared to pay well and above the PUP handout, though he doesn't actually mention a number.

If he’s struggling to get applications for the positions now...err... Who is going to be wanting to work for an individual like that ?

Maybe he should open his mind to the reality that during a pandemic, people won’t be falling over themselves to apply for a job that takes them into contact with xxx people per week, over xx hours, in a reasonably confined setting...

People will do nearly anything for to gain like, views and followers. For the WM, it is working.

During a time when a lot of business in his industry are on their knees; his business is not only surviving but by all accounts thriving.

Yes he's a media whore and always was but there's plenty of truth in what he's saying. I've had plenty of lads turn down jobs at the moment between 450 and 480 euro per week. Not the best jobs in the world, warehouse operative unskilled stuff but opportunity for overtime etc and permanent jobs. They'll be looking for these jobs when pup ends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,122 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

Maybe this has nothing to do with money and people just dont want to work for him because they dont like him?

He is a knob best ignored.
Seemingly he treats his staff like crap, if he didn't he might be able to hang onto them.

He will do or say anything for a bit of publicity.

If the owner can't "find " staff for his establishment why thinking that workers from this industry are sitting in front of TV and happy on PUP? Some are waiting for the previous bars/restaurants where they worked,to reopen and some are looking /starting new jobs in different industries, because these one is f....d for the next few yrs. I worked in hospitality for the last 13 yrs and now looking for an apprenticeship job in plumbing or electrician.

Sure if some of his workers are on PUP and not coming back to work he has a point.

Otherwise its a bit of general statement with little to back it up beyond the highest non working numbers in god knows how long and no alternative jobs.

Maybe he has a point, this was an issue post the first lockdown. Either way good advertising as ever.

I think there's a germ of truth there, no doubt a few are delighted to be subsidised to sit home on 350 a week.

But its really rubbing salt in the wound suggesting that PUP takers in general are welfare scammers.

Its doubly aggravating to anyone who doesn't wholeheartedly believe in the lockdowns: first your job is taken away, then you're accused of being a laze-bag.

Great publicity I suppose, though I'll never give that cafe a cent of my money ever.

They may have decided to exit a volatile, newly-insecure industry.

Who's to say *for definite* there won't be more shutdowns?

He can't find staff because he's a tosser, nothing to do with PUP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭chuck eastwood

Don't really care much about him one way or the other but he's right. Place in in no there was about 130 floor unskilled staff who were on the PuP twice in the last year. When lockdowns came in and orders took a hit people were at each others throats to be first in line to stay hom for 350 a week. Im not exactly sure how it works but our general manager had to threaten dismissal for staff who wouldn't come back.
I totally get why low paid workers would feel they are better off at home but if there is a full time job waiting for you with a chance of pay rises and decent bonuses and free courses then I think in our company you would certainly be called out over it

Parents please show this post and the White moose cafe website to your children. If you dont do well at school and go to college or get a trade you are going to end up working for a tosser like this with no other options.

Its Fiat currency and prevents you from developing. It will be paid back one way or another but it will have to be reckoned with at some stage. Me thinks in September when interest rates adjust.

Not the first nor the last time he says something controversial.

    Jan 17th 2018, https://www.dailyedge.ie/white-moose-cafe-3801787-Jan2018/
PAUL STENSON OF The White Moose Café and Charleville Lodge in Dublin has a bit of reputation for being a wind-up merchant.

But hey, if you don't like him - don't go to his cafe. It's really that simple.

Who said PUP has to be paid back?

It’s not free money, my wife was on it from March to Jan this year and has a 2k sum of tax to be deducted from her wages for the next year or 2

If they're on PUP then they have a job to go back to. If they're fraudulently claiming it that's another issue.

As much as people on Boards like to complain about people staying on social welfare, etc. I do understand why people wouldn't work with this guy.
He seems like a horrible git to be honest.

He might be a horrible git but I would hesitate to push away a half or even a quarter share of one of his towering chocolatey desserts right this minute.

He comes across as an ass but at the end of the day, here is a thread on boards talking about it so mission accomplished.
il bet a lot of people who had never heard of him have looked up the White moose cafe today. Its all about the clicks and he wont give a toss how he gets them (as he's proven many times in the past)

Once you start back working you will be paying a higher rate of tax until its paid back. I know a few people working on sites and last year when they went back to work they got a shock in their 1st few pay packets.

Did Supermac’s Pat McDonagh get this much “coverage” when he complained about similar last year?

In fairness to the knob who runs that place, he always gets the attention he craves. Why wouldn't he keep doing it, when people keep reacting? They fall into two camps. People like me, I suppose, who think him a gobshite and say so and those who think he's a "legend", sticking it to people.

Taxing a payment is different to being made to repay it. The article you linked to seems to be talking about tax only.

I don’t like him - but I think he has a point. He has a b&b (not sure if it’s a hotel) on top of the cafe - I’d say this is were he is struggling to get staff for this as his cafe - well his out door van thing is packed anytime I’ve gone past - he also does deliveries and he ain’t cheap. I’ve never eaten in it or from it but I know people who have and they say it’s lovely...

Aye, I'm very reluctantly retired due to ill health and I'd skip back to work in a second if I could. Whilst there are always wasters, most people hate sitting at home on welfare and genuinely want to contribute to society. What his ad is telling me is that he'd be a terrible boss. That is one job I wouldn't want to hop to if I could work again.

Him not being able to get staff,is a consequence of his actions and carryon

Sympathy for him, deosnt run too deep here anyway.....maybe he should pack it up,so noone need read his really cringy middle class attempt at wind up,which is in reality patethic childlike attention seeking

Alot of one and two star employee reviews on indeed

I could have linked the wrong article as I've read a few on the subject but last year if you had accepted the pup payment, it came back out of your tax. Maybe not the full amount of it but a good chunk. You had an option as to how long you wanted to pay it back over. I think the choice was 1-4 years.
