Where are the dedicated threads to measles and flu? There's loads of diseases around but this COVID obsession is not healthy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,037 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Has anyone ever been killed by a vending machine?

Why would you want to look up something that doesn't mutate, infect or make people ill.

Personally I keep informed about COVID and make little changes to how I go about things if there is a bad strain. I don't wear a mask but I always have a hand sanitizer in my car. I always had that before COVID for petrol stations. I've seen filthy farmers filling up their vehicles with crap all over their hands so I decided to bring something to make sure I didn't pick up an infection.

I check the weather every day, all the sports I follow, read WHO reports, read about events from the past, the Doomsday clock and if it moves then why, reports about any health issue that's around, I have cancer so I don't want to pick up anything. There's lots more I check on every day or some maybe every second or third day.

It's good to be informed. Information is good for the brain.

Would you jump into a thread on diabetes and start telling people who might be concerned about the risks, or have family members suffering from it, that they shouldn't be paying attention to developments related to it?

Covid has clearly shown itself over time to be in actual and in potential a far more serious threat than flu. Even if there are months now where the risk of covid drops. So that is not "hysteria", that is recognising it is entirely reasonable to be more vigilant about it than flu. The full impact of long covid is also still being established.

Your posts are self discrediting at this stage when you're unable to make your point without shouting "hysteria" without foundation & you loudly proclaim you've "moved on" as you continue to post here.

You said it is only getting talked about online, when the reason why a post was made on this forum was because of an article in a news outlet.

COVID is not more dangerous than flu. You should educate yourself. Statistically you've a lot more things to kill you than COVID or make you severely ill.

also that "news outlet" was a tabloid who want to keep you scared and obsessed to keep their clicks up. you're being controlled by the media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,037 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Can you give me a link to information on that please?

Just so as I can make sure it never happens to me. I think I used one in the last 18 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,657 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Are we only allowed to be concerned about one thing? Did any of those things lead to a recent global pandemic which has impacts on society and killed millions? Nope.

You were asked this question in previous post and you ignored it, further discrediting your flimsy position.

Would you jump into a thread on diabetes and start telling people who might be concerned about the risks, or have family members suffering from it, that they shouldn't be paying attention to developments related to it?

You are making multiple vague claims without foundation about covid and flu. "You should educate yourself" -> cop out answer.

While the rates of serious illness, hospitalizations, and death from COVID-19 are significantly lower than during the height of the pandemic in early 2020 and 2021, recent data indicates that COVID-19 remains more serious than influenza

    https://www.ahcancal.org/News-and-Communications/Blog/Pages/Flu-or-COVID-19---Which-is-Worse.aspx

And then we get the old "You're being controlled by the media" - and the argument totally jumps the shark into conspiracy theory dog whistling from someone earlier on the thread was putting covid in the same category of risk as vending machines.

    Self discrediting nonsense.

That's the problem - you're concerned about COVID.

Most of the global population are not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,037 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

If you know all about it then surely you can provide a link.

Have you fact based stats on this? Again please provide a link.

If you are making statements then back them up or gtfo.

I'm not going to waste my time with links when you can google something easily and what I'm saying is obvious enough. I think your "concern" with COVID and this thread highlights mental health issues IMO. You have my empathy but I've no chance of changing your mind so I'll leave you to it.

Vending machines are extremely lethal. Say if an overweight person was reaching inside to retrieve their purchased item and their hand gets stuck. Upon forcing their trapped hand out the metal of the lid cuts their hand. This could lead to an infection in this cut , sepsis or gangrene could develop and inevitably death.

The risk is low however in the interest of public safety all vending machines should be banned immediately. It is in order to protect the Irish people.

Wikipedia has more startling info. This link is titled “death by vending machine”. People think it’s a joke but it’s 100% real.

Well I read the links from that article and they all relate to people tipping over vending machines to try get free stuff.

That's just pure stupidity on their part so nothing to worry about for anybody with a bit of common sense. It's not something I have to read about ever again.

It has no relation to a virus which can enter your body without you doing something stupid.

I caught Covid again for a second time in January as did my other half about a month later. Far less scary than first time around; which for me was last May and saw me end up in A&E and then onto an Acute unit on their advice. 3 further months of heart/lung issues. Its FAR more serious than a once a generation bad flu in terms of its wider impacts and recent studies have pointed to cumulative damage building up upon each subsequent infection. Rather than increased tolerance and immunity. I don't have the link and I'm not searching for it. Let he who has eyes see.

I wouldn't underestimate the future risks re AI-augmented self-aware vending machines. The injuries and deaths could reach epidemic levels...

"I think your "concern" with COVID and this thread highlights mental health issues IMO" - repeating this in 3+ posts 'could' be a sign of OCD behaviour. I'm not a shrink but I have suffered with OCD years ago and grew out of it. So get some help as that's what your posts are screaming for. You're welcome and good luck.

If anybody is seeking to downplay or revise the experience of Covid in the early days and what a killer it was pre vaccination, a recommendation, nay should be a required watch...

Found it harrowing and brought back a lot that I had blacked out and did not want to think about again.

Written by a doctor who worked through this time in the NHS, it graphically showed how bad things got very quickly over there with their lying ineffectual government / and incompetent governance.

We did not get it as bad because we did a lot of things earlier, like closing schools and lockdown.

We however did make the same mistake with nursing homes.

But whether we want to forget this awful time or not, it is not a mature or intelligent response to say "oh no, I don't want to hear it" or" lets not talk about it anymore. ".

Difficult experiences as the pandemic was, need to be examined and thought about and talked through especially if the experience is to be learned from.

No point ignoring what was a life changing event for many even if now getting on with their lives.

This has made worldwide news this week, our own Trinity College Neuroscience researchers have made a discovery that further clarifies the link between brain fog and those suffering from Long Covid,

Leaky blood vessels in the brain and a hyperactive immune system response in some patients causing brain fog.. See link from Trinity News released this week 22nd and by today on every publication around the wirld!

The series with yer man playing Boris Johnson was better

The UK did lead when 'reopening' something our cowards in leadership didn't and let it all down to 'unelected health professionals' who 'May' of had there own agendas outside of 'Covid'

Different perspective. This is deliberately showing the nitty gritty of the effects of those decisions inside the hospitals.

Written by Rachel Clarke and also produced by Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty) and Prasanna Puhwarahnajah who are all medical doctors, so its very real.

I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though.

    Did you watch it?

I found it hard and I have worked and seen much of that.

I liked the other one too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,657 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

As an aside - Jed Mercurio scripted the hard hitting medical series Cardiac Arrest in the 90s and did a stint on wards as a trainee doctor before focusing full time on writing.

Surprised this anniversary didn't get any media attention.

Who, apart from the media, can forget Leo's announcement shutting all our schools, colleges and childcare facilities with immediate effect? I don't think there has been a more dramatic TV announcement in our history.

But who remembers that Leo was standing in front of Mike Pence's residence and that Leo had lost the election just a month earlier?

But, somehow..., he survived and he's back although this time not meeting Mike Pence (who fell out with Trump after 4 years of loyal service!) but Kamala Harris, the reason Democrats can't find an alternative candidate to the man everyone knows is too old for his job. Leo and Kamala could chat about why Modi won't invite either of them to visit their parental homeland. Rishi Sunak got a great welcome, but his father-in-law saw to that!

What does the last bit have to do with Covid ?

Hard not to look back at 2020 and 2021 not feel a little embarrassed. This whole part of boards was pretty mental and intense

All behind us now and people need to remember it all for next years general election

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,777 ✭✭✭Caquas

The last paragraph recalls the weird twists of fate that determined which politicians made unprecedented decisions during the pandemic. Instead of Churchill and FDR we got a weird mixture of leaders - Trump and Boris (at least they did win one election each.)

Four years ago today we had the bizarre spectacle of Leo as acting Taoiseach, having just lost the election, shutting Ireland down from the steps of the US Vice-President’s residence. Now Mike Pence is gone because he accepted that he and Trump lost the election.

In his place is Kamala Harris because Biden was hoist on his own petard - he promised a minority woman and was left with little option but the woman whose candidacy no one supported and who attacked him as pandering to segregationists. And what do she and Leo have in common - India!

All of which goes to show that the world needs more credible leaders to face the next pandemic.

I was in CUH A&E today and surprised by no masks on patients or nurses or doctors, patients coughing without even covering their mouth

I probably still do little things now as routine

I suppose some are still more aware it is around and act accordingly, each individual is different, take care stay safe all

The new Covid 'FLiRT' variants, KP. 1.1 and KP.2, have been confirmed in Ireland - with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre reporting 23 cases of these strains so far.

These 'FLiRT' variants are offshoots of the JN. 1 variant - all part of the broader Omicron family - that has been spreading for most of this year. The acronym in the name refers to the locations of the amino acid mutations that the virus has picked up - amino phenylalanine (F) replaces leucine (L), and arginine (R) is replaced by threonine (T).

Healthcare professionals worldwide are reporting a rise in 'FliRT' cases, sparking fears that these variants may be more transmissible and better at escaping prior immunity than previous waves.

Same. Have it now over a week. Was seriously tired for the first few days and now the last day or two, have a cough, blocked head, sinus pressure and runny nose.

Woke up Monday feeling crap after feeling perfectly fine Sunday. Had a few tests so said I'd do them. Positive.

3rd time now and this is the worst. Chest and head feel like they want to explode. Aching all over, and non stop sweating. Feels like 100 degrees 😂

Good few others I know have it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,900 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    From RTE

There is increased Covid-19 activity in Ireland, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre has said.

There were 502 cases seen in the week to 2 June, compared with 306 cases the previous week.

However, there were no ICU admissions and no deaths reported in the last week.

No new variant of concern has been identified and currently the predominant variant is the JN.1 strain.

The HPSC said that increased waves are usually seen every three to five months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,887 ✭✭✭signostic

Third time to have it but this time it feels worse. Sweating in bed the past 3 nights, sheets and pillows wet from sweating. Had to get up in middle of night to change bed clothes. Sneezing alot before a positive test on Thursday last, then sore throat, headache, runny nose and I now have a cough. Not nice.

    Has covid changed things ?

People are not as social and more aware of crowd safety etc

Funerals a little different, less going to the 'viewing'

Lifestyles have changed some for the better, some for the worst

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

I’d say people use it as an excuse and suit themselves much like the whole lockdown. People took the parts that suited them and ran with it but where is started to impact them a bit more the rules became a bit more disposable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,900 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    From Yahoo News

A new - and potentially more transmissible - variant of COVID could become dominant this winter, experts believe.

Global cases of the XEC variant have been rising slowly since it was first identified in Germany in June.

In the US, the variant now accounts for 6% of sequenced infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. XEC has also emerged in the UK, but case numbers are not currently known.

Scott Roberts, an infectious diseases specialist at Yale Medicine, said: “One reason for the concern is that XEC has moved quickly enough to outpace the growth of all other variants in a few areas in Europe."
