I'm having a hard time sourcing 150x150mmx2.8m. I did get one quote for 80 quid each! It was for Douglas fir but still.
How difficult would it be to glue/screw two 150x75s (just spruce)? Just have the usual power tools, clamps etc.

It seems like it should work inprinciple, but I'm sure the nature of wood will make it not so straightforward
Its for posts for a pergola so all compression no bending or torsion.

Just ordered 2 no 3m lengths of 150 x 150 treated posts myself from Timbertrove Rathfarmham thanks to a post on this forum. Clonee Sawmills have them also.

In my experience, the ease of laminating timber depends on a few things

    - How straight and smooth the timber is
    - Which glue you're using
    - How many clamps you own, you cannot ever own too many clamps
    - Whether you'll be painting the result, because paint covers a multitude of sins

The best results (joinery quality) will come from straight timber, PU glue (e.g. Titebond, ideally III for outdoors but II will do), and lots of clamps.

If you have fewer or no clamps you can instead use a pile of timber to weigh it down until the glue grabs, typically 30 mins to an hour.

If the timber is less straight and you don't own loads of clamps you can use gap filling glue like water activated Gorilla (the brown stuff):

... but it will tend to foam out and require scraping, sanding or planing to clean up. Cascamite will work out cheaper but keeps for less time once opened. It doesn't create a mess like Gorilla and is easier to clean up.

If you just want strength and don't need the gap filling, the Titebond is great, but it needs straight planed timber really.

Thanks, Timbertrove won't deliver out to Longford, and email sent to Clonee. But with intercounty travel opening soon I might just be able to collect ...

Thanks, that's what I thought, but great to see it written down with actual names of products. If I was going this way I'd prob route out a channel on each face, or even flute it, to hide the seam. It'll be painted too.
I'll have to check with the local hw to see if their boards are semiplaned or saw finished

The lads in Timbertrove are cutting mine to 2.7m to fit in our Kadjar with seats down. Any of the daily couriers could collect them for you. You sound hell bent on the laminate though !!

Slowly going off the idea. Actually had the tape measure out in the car today, :-) will fit with small overhang wif front seat down and boot open. About 30-35 kg each so no bother if I get a hand loading. Will ring Crowes in Leitrim to see about spruce before deciding.

Surely Glennon’s in Longford could sort you out.

Have you tried jousting style with them sticking out an open front window. I wouldn't travel far like that but wouldn't bother me for the 6 miles into the local builders merchants. Put an old blanket or towel over the window cill to protect it.

Another classic is to put a car inner tube on the roof (in lieu of a roof rack) and tie either end of the wood to the front and rear bumper.

Wake me up when it's all over.
