Was underneath the car today investigating a squeak i thought was coming from sway bar bushings. I don't think it is, to me it sounds like the rear shock, ill attach a video, but if it is, does it mean replacement or can I spray some silicone in and around the shock? Its functioning as it should the car doesn't continue to bounce after the springs are compressed going over bumps.

Could be.mounting points or trailing arm bushings etc.
    What car is it?

Probably hard to tell from the video but to me it sounds like its coming from the shock, whether its the piston itself or mounting or bushing I don't know

Have you had the car up ok, safely, to pull the wheel from side to side as it may be bushings. Hard to tell from video.

Hard to tell exactly but I doubt it's the shock itself.
Take a look at the spring seats, shock mounting bolts and where the shock mounts in the boot, a quick sprits of WD40 will remove the squeak short term, enough time to track it down.
Short of that, you'll be looking at other suspension bushes and last resort, the axle.

Spray lube and patients are your friend in this case. Buy a good set of axle stands and book a couple of hours away from the family. :pac:

Fair enough, it's only from the passenger rear im hearing it which is where the video is taken. What I'm doing the make the squeak is I have my hand under the ends of the sway bar and pushing and pulling which is making the shock move up and down a bit. It does seem like its coming from above not level to where I am on the ground near the trailing arm bushings or anything. So maybe I'll check the shock mount at the top

Open boot and press down on each side one should hear where its coming from or rock left and right.

Its definitely the left, and only the left, can't hear anything from the right side. If it is the shocks would it be best practice to replace in pairs anyway

If you think its a shock squeak can you disconnected the lower bolt and bounce again just to make sure it is or is not the issue. If you can live with a squeaky shock be it so as when a shock leaks both are replaced due to nct.

I'll give that a go, it didn't come to mind, I'm not the greatest thinker at the best of times, thanks!

Its a matter of eliminate issues.
What we would do on a 4 poster ramp is someone up above bouncing car and someone placing hand on various things to pick up vibration underneath as pulling or pushing on an item can change sound.

If sound is not there when its raining wet rubber on bushes go quiet and when dry squeak.

Should be quick enough to do as its the rear shock so just the one bolt to take off at the bottom "eye" as I call it
