Patio layers - on existing concrete and soil

I am looking at paving a section of my garden with silver granite. A significant area is already concrete which I plan to pave over but also want to extend the paving into a smaller area occupied with grass at the moment.
For the layers should there be any difference between laying on existing concrete and laying on soil? Is there less work required laying on concrete-if so what would the differences be?
