NCT fail?

All four tyres changed at the same time approx 40k km ago.

Front two well above the 1mm limit.

Back two - one tyre has the 4 threads just above the 1mm. Left rear has one thread flat with the 1mm line the others slightly above.

I know I should have checked. I'll try and get the back two replaced today (they are not a common tyre), but if I can't and I've the NCT tomorrow is there a chance they'll not allow me to drive home if I go in?

Minimum thread depth is 1.6mm if I remember correctly, so all four need replacing. I’d say they will not let you drive home with those tyres.

When you say the 1mm line, do you mean the wear indicators?

    Sorry, yes, the wear indicator.

2 front tyres well above it. Only one tyre below the wear indicator (sorry 1.6mm) line.

    Spare?

Tyre tread less than 1.6 mm is classified as a “dangerous defect”, so no driving home.

You only need 1.6mm across the centre 2/3 of the tyre to pass. A tyre has to be truly desperate in all reality to fail an NCT.

You're description hurt my brain though, post a pic and we'll soon tell you.

Alas, that stupid canister. But, thanks for the suggestion.

And, just off the phone the guy I go to has two in stock, so... phew :)

Whether that passes or fails, it’s extremely marginal and you need to replace them anyway, might as well get all 4 done and be safe for 40k more driving

These are the front two. The car would stop on a dime, even in the wet. They cost approx €300 per corner.

if you fail for thread depth they'll just slap a "dangerous vehicle" notice on your car, they can't stop you from driving only the guards can do that

Have you measured the actual depth of the thread? Going on those pics I'd reckon they'd pass, they look to be similarly worn to my own which have 40k on them too, I'll change mine before winter.

No, just going by the thread indicators. The front two should fly through - but the rear two probably need to be changed soon anyway, so may as well get them done.

Dunlop Sportmaxx - it's why I want to get good value out of them :pac:

And they are ridiculously good value. My previous car would be doing very well to get 10k km out of them and they were more like €330 a corner. So, thrilled with these :pac: Everything is relative.

Looking at those pictures, you should be fine even with those that are close to the 1.6mm

    Really? That's mad.

The NCT staff can’t/won’t stop you from driving home with bald tyres. They’ll put a ‘Failed Dangerous’ sticker on your window which you simply remove before driving home.

Just saw the photos. They’ll definitely pass

Last year to pass the NCT I needed ONE new tyre - they came out with the fail sheet and a big page that said dangerous tyres attached to the NCT fail notice. They told me my other 2 tyres were borderline fail and were dangerous and I would need to replace them almost immediately - but those 2 did pass. There was a tyre garage across the road ao I asked if they’d lt me drive the car there to get the one new tyre I needed to pass & then come back and do the visual for the fail. They said Ok - I got the new one tyre, did the visual re-inspection and passed the NCT. They then still handed me the dangeous notification for the car for the other 2 tyres - the ones that HAD passed the NCT and allowed me drive home. After all - I had the NCT sticker. It was all a bit monty python but I appreciated it as the threads of the tyres were ok but the sides were apparently f****ed. I got 2 more new tyres a few days later. I guess they are trying to cover themselves and keep everyone safe. And with that notice in their computer if anyone had looked and if I’d had an accident my insurance would have most likely refused to pay out.

There was no sticker - just a printed A4 sheet of paper.

My old car had an issue with the brakes and they gave me the same sheet - I’d had no idea . They refused to let my drive but had driven it out and given me the keys. I argued that they were working and nothing seemed wrong & I would get it fixed & drive to a garage but they were so upset and argued so long about how dangerous it was that I decided to just taKe them at their word and called a tow truck as a breakdown under my insurance - free to me as I had ‘broken down and had trouble with my brakes’ 2k from my house. The tow truck guy came and had a look and went white and said the cables were leaking and hanging by a thread - any stone or bump could have severed it and left me doing 100K on the motorway with severed brakes. He towed me to a garage & I got them fixed and then later rebooked and drove back & passed the NCT. Had a rosy feeling when they guys saw me and came out to thank me.

The indicator isn’t always necessarily 1.6mm.

Those look a lot better than I was expecting tbh.

Bought 2 dunlop sport maxx RT 2 275/40R18 Y XL for my dad a few years ago

282 euro for both including vat and delivery no fitting. Are you being ripped off at 300 a corner or do 20 inch really add that much to the cost?

    Great tyres

Sport maxx are a great tyre, grippy and really quiet. I had them on a Mazda and stuck with them

Ended up getting for €240 each. A great price. Were ordered and intended for someone else, wrote off his car the night before getting fitted

They really are, but I'd an horrendous experience with tyres previously.

Although, I'd realy like some day to have a car where the rear tyres don't wear first. :)
