Replacing rear crank seal on 1.9 bkc engine.

A friend has bought a 1.9 Tdi engine (BKC) to fit in his 2007 Skoda Octavia.
The engine has come without the rear crank seal and I have got a replacement from local engineering works. Made by Victor Reinz.
Have been reading up on how to fit this as its quite different from the seals used in older cars - being PTFE and also including a sensor.
Some sites recommend using the special tool for installing the seal - while others say in can be done by having the engine at TDC and lining up the 3 holes accurately.
I would like to know if anyone on the forum has carried out this work without the special tool - and the engine started and ran OK afterwards.
    Any suggestions/advice appreciated.
