Got a poclain 688 with deutz 4cyl engine, starts ok and runs for few minutes then loses power and engine revs goes low and then high, oil been changed but its get thin in short time and is grey in colour, cant be water as air cooled so what do you think

Diesel is the only other fluid interacting with the engine

Seems a rapid leak, lift pump maybe?

I would first try removing the lift pump leaving the pipes attached and see does it drip diesel
