Anyone else get an email today saying watch a certain show free on eir tv ? Was actually on Apple TV for which they wanted sub- unusual for eir to send something like this.

Yes, cheeky - but email did not mention it was free. Eir likely getting a kick back for every person that signs up.

Too late now but according to the chap in the eir store this wasn't eVision being deprecated. It was a bug. All Irish channels are back now and they're working on getting the rest "asap"

I wonder if they'll add more channels at some point. It's potentially competitive with Virgin but it's not really a broad enough line up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Yes, the channel lineup needs to be refreshed a little.

Below may be possible without huge effort or cost:

    • Add the HD variants of E4/More4/Film4.
    • Add Sky News HD, BBC Three, Pick & Challenge.
    • Upgrade the quality of the Discovery range of channels (Discovery, TLC, Quest etc) - they're not great.
    • Drop Eurosport 4K (it's embarrassing).

Also... fix that annoying bug that when you open the app first, an overlay menu appears on live TV - but if you press backup, it closes the app instead of hiding the menu.

That is annoying actually, think if you click Live TV helps but yeah I always hit Back out of habit too.

One thing that I miss that wish could bring back is been able to record on BBC! I actually realise I recorded very little else since option has been taken away!!

I would take been able to rewind the last seven days at this stage, I miss greatly not been able to record BBC.

you are not serious ? The rep I spoke to was adamant it was gone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭kooga

anyway rang eir today and asked could they bring evision back for me , answer was no but they gave me eir tv - with no activation fee and an additional credit on my account. The Apple TV box I had bought separately is back up and running - I just couldn’t face another weekend of the rugby in sd on saorview!! Thank you

The price is increasing to €14.99 in the next few days so nows a good time to sign up especially with the €100 broadband cashback.

Edit: This sort of sounds like an ad but it's not! 🤣 just think the Apple TV is a fantastic bit of kit, especially if you get Infuse for a Stremio-esque experience

    I will also recommend Vidi.

Other good apps are Chillio or UHF for non eir IPTV needs.

Yeah what is the point of that Eurosport UHD channel? I have literally never seen anything on it. It's effectively a holding page.

Anyone else’s remote eating through batteries? I’ve had to change them four times already since March

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Some MTV music channels have been added to the service. Not sure when they appeared, spotted them yesterday for the first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

not seeing those new MTV channels or anything extra on my service.

Wonder if they’ve different IPTV head ends on the network.,,

They should be in the music section. I can see them on all devices, screenshot below from my phone.

Maybe part off eir TV Extra pack?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭JDxtra

I do have the extra pack and I’m not seeing these channels at all.

all that is coming up is MTV HD in the Music section on the Apple TV Box, but I am seeing them on the iPhone ..

    edit:

Found them, but they haven’t been categorised as Music.

I also only have the basic pack.

Found the channels by going to All Channels and then scrolling all the way down to the kids channels and then after Cartoon Network the new MTV channels are there

I am looking at eir TV and just wanted to check on some of the features or lack there of:

    1. Recording TV, my understanding is that you can't record of series link RTE or BBC. Can you do that to other channels OK?
    2. Pausing TV. Can you still pause live tv for RTE and BBC and others?
    3. Understand that for RTE you can't record. Do you have to then go to the RTEPlayer and suffer the ads or is there some other RTE playback function without Ads?

I’ve only had it for a few months myself but I’ll try to answer your questions.

    1. Recording seems to work on all channels I’ve tried except RTÉ, Virgin Media and BBC channels. BBC has no recording or watch from start. A lot of RTE and Virgin stuff can be watched from start, some you can even go back on the guide and watch something. I find the Channel 4 channels very good for recording and watching from start. They even allow fast forwarding ads on recordings and paused programmes.

    2. You can pause RTE, BBC, etc. You can then fast forward if needs be but if you change channel you go back to live and can’t go back again. Not sure how long you can pause for, maybe someone else can advise?

    3. There is a RTÉ Player option in the sidebar but it literally just opens the RTÉ Player app on the Apple TV. It’s not integrated into the Eir app at all. They do have a catch up service on the app with a selection of programmes from RTÉ, Virgin and UKTV (Dave, etc. not BBC), not sure how much they add here but it’s definitely not the full catalog of each player.

Overall for a tenner a month I find it’s good value, especially basically free multi room if you’ve other Apple TV’s in your home. Wouldn’t pay full price for it. If you’re coming from Sky or other traditional TV service with proper recording it’ll be a learning curve but you get used to it quick enough.

If they had a 3rd tier of service with the full range of channels, at least as good or better than Virgin Media, I really think they'd find a decent uptake. It's a good service, but just lacking in that regard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,610 ✭✭✭NewClareman

One of the advantages of eir TV using an Apple TV box is the wide range of apps available. Many of those Apps are very well integrated and you can scroll through what's on without opening the particular app. Unfortunately, that's not the case with NOW TV which I use for extra channels and sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭JDxtra

It would take a lot to budge me from the Apple TV devices. So nice to use, best streaming device around. Plus - unlike Google / Android TV based devices - there are no ads for other services on the home page. That alone is worth it!

But yeah, Now TV need to update their app to support that feature (whatever it's called).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

The Apple hardware and tvOS experience is great, but yeah NowTV is a pile of … I'd much rather those channels just be integrated into the EirTV app.

The EirTV app itself is actually pretty decent - I assume it's probably the same software being used by the Illiad companies i.e. Free's TV service, Salt in Switzerland etc.

    Hi Folks,

Apologies in advance if my questions seem somewhat basic but I’m not a techie!😂

Currently have Eir for TV and Broadband…..currently just on one TV but likely to be getting a second TV for a bedroom soon.

Have Eir through the Apple TV box and find it fairly good,it’s very annoying you can’t record on likes of BBC anymore but it’s not a game breaker.

    Few quick questions-

1-Would we need to get a second Apple TV box and remote to use the Second TV in a different room?………,including the extra rental cost for it…..or could you get it to work off the primary box iykwim?

2-If you had a separate box for the other TV could you watch different programmes on it simultaneously to what was being watched on the original box?

3-In general are the rates that Eir charge for the combined TV and Broadband package reasonably competitive compared to their rivals…….even for Broadband alone?

Thanks for any replies to the above🙂

You will need to get another Apple TV box in order to watch different programmes on another TV. You could slave the second TV off the first one - but then you would be forced to watch the same programmes on both TVs. You could do this by running a HDMI cable to the extra TV or using wireless HDMI dongles. You would also need a HDMI splitter at the Apple TV box.

You don't need to rent the second Apple TV box from Eir (although this is their recommended way of getting multiroom). You can buy additional Apple TV boxes outright, and you will only have to pay eir the €9.99 standard fee for TV. Eir often sell refurbished Apple TV boxes for €59.99 on their eir-store.ie site (they are out of stock at the moment). You could also pick up 2nd-hand Apple TV boxes on Adverts.ie, eBay etc (Be careful that they are not stolen - a huge amount of stolen goods are sold on these sites). When you have your additional Apple TV box, just download the eir TV app from the app store. If you buy your own Apple TV boxes, they may come with the original Apple Remote rather than the eir TV remote that eir ships with it's boxes. This isn't a major issue - you can use any remote with the Apple TV box - and you can also buy additional eir remotes from the eir store site.

The €9.99pm rate that eir charge for TV is extremely competitive. They are also very willing to renew at this price when your 12 month contract needs to be renewed - but you have to phone them to negotiate this. This is the best TV streaming box of all the providers, and the best price. Combined with the €9.99 SIM-only price for eir Mobile SIM's it makes the eir Bundles very competitive.

I bough my second apple tv from CEX, it had EIR remote with it, current model for €70, work perfectly.

They need to remove Eurosport 4K, nothing been broadcast on it in two years.
