actually my tv remote worked for my firestick and has just stopped working in recent week or so….. it won’t work for the Apple TV either

It should, all setting seem to be ok but there must be something askew. Do you know anywhere that would be a good source of knowledge to fix this?

good modern my Apple TV box bought direct from eir arrived this morning- and I set it up , it automatically came with the eir tv app and worked straight away . So I have evision in one room and the Apple TV as a multi room in another room. I’m in contract with eir till October and will probably remove the evision box then .

My TV Remotes stopped working with AppleTV after a recent AppleTV software update. Two started working again after a couple of days. I couldnt get it to work with the Samsung TV after trying all the online suggestions. I set up the Samsung TV as a new install and it works fine now. (The setup process, with the AppleTV already connected to the TV gave an option to set up the remote.)

I can’t program my remote to tv at all.

Wow. That’s a significant development. Did you receive notification from Eir about that?

I still can set a recording of BBC 1 for next few weeks as shown on my eir tv mobile IOS app.

Is it just that you are trying to do it in the EPG and it’s not letting you, or has there been an official communication from eir setting out that they are removing the ability to record BBC? If the former it may be a glitch, if the latter then that’s a worrying development - going the opposite way to the way things should be going.

I have no problem setting record next week. Just tried setting up series recording of the proms throughout the summer with no problems.

Same, setup a BBC recording for late next week - no issues.

All the Discovery owned channels are problematic this evening- video breaking up badly and occasionally showing an error.

I didn't program the remote. There was an option on Samsung TV setup to set up the AppleTV to use the TV remote.

My TV remote (Sony) can control the Apple TV without any setup - just worked straight away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,530 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

once something is plugged in via HDMI in a reasonably modern tv it can generally be controlled via the tv remote.

My was working like that but just stopped and I can’t figure out why

Yes I got a text . From July 16th you are no longer able to record BBC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭AJB39

That’s a major backward step. I presume the BBC have made them do it. It pretty much ends any chance of any other supplier allowing BBC recording on their streaming boxes.

    for the record

Maybe the BBC should just stop making it's channels available altogether to providers here and launch a full subscription streaming service.

I would be very annoyed at this but thankfully I'm with Virgin and have a 360 box.

    It’s a really retrograde step.

If recording is mission critical, then Sky Q or Saorview/Freesat are essentially your only options, and don’t expect Sky Q to last long.

I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if another operator applied pressure on the BBC. If they couldn’t get BBC recording, then nobody else should have it.

I have just received the text. Very annoying that I got so little warning compared to others on here. When I first got eir you could record nearly every channel except rte and now not at all. Means I’ll miss the final of the traitors

Just got this from Eir: ''From 16th July, the recording function for BBC programmes is no longer available to eir TV customers, due to rights issues''.

    What a crock of ****!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭done123

Most of the programs that I record are from the BBC, even if you were able to roll back EPG like RTE or Virgin, but BBC you cannot do this. I agree 100% it a retrograde step.

Why don't you expect BBC recording on SkyQ to last long ?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,882 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

No you misunderstand me; I don’t expect Sky Q as an option for new customers to last long - it might not even last the year - because Sky are now promoting Stream, which doesn’t require them to pay an installer to visit the customer to install a dish. Already you need to scroll to the very bottom of the TV page on Sky’s website to even find mention of Sky Q; though for now it can still be ordered.

I don’t mean they’ll take away recording BBC from anyone who has Q already. At least I don’t think they will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,607 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Ok, sorry I did misunderstand. If pay tv provider s want to shift everyone to streaming, they are going to have to find some way of persuading the BBC to allow much more access to an on demand version of their programmes as in an Irish version of the iPlayer so to speak. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but recording is a deal breaker foe me, because in our house, we hardly ever watch live TV, except sport, everything else is recorded.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,882 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Well, that is exactly what Sky have put in place, but it appears the service leaves a lot to be desired in terms of missing content. (When I saw it, and that was early days as I left Sky shortly afterwards, it didn’t even have the news). But I did wonder about that text from eir and whether there was some implication that they were going down a similar road but my understanding was that Sky deal was exclusive in the ROI market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,607 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Sorry, I should have said that I do have SkyQ and yes, the BBC on demand section IS very limited, it might have grown a little since you saw it, but not much. Still no news or current affairs programmes on it, practically no sport, etc. If they disable recording of BBC on SkyQ ,I'm gone, thinking of leaving anyway as its just getting too expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭golfball37

Of my 113 recordings on eir tv the BBC make up 81

I never watch live tv unless it’s sport, unfortunately I have 10 months left on my eir contract but will be moving or at the least dropping eir tv if this remains the case. Without access to iPlayer I’ll be missing out on a lot of tv
